Sadly, far too true. I grew up in the NE, but Mom Deuced is from south of the Mason-Dixon line. Her accent is noticeable, but not overwhelming. While in court one day, a judge (whose accent if you had not idea of what he did and just met him on the street would make you think he was a mechanic in Revere) told her "ya know, you prahbably should think abowt whirrking ahn that ackcent of yahrs." Mom was apoplectic when she got home and for a while thought of seeing a speech therapist to help her lose her accent. Then she decided it was better to lull the assholes into a sense of security that she was slower - made it easier for her to slay them later in court when they underestimated her.
