They don't like him in Hollywood. He's been too much of a pain in their collective asses for years, and he's never needed them.
His performance in Mystic River is probably one of the top ten performances of any actor, male or female, that I've ever seen. Russell Crowe (who invited the GOP governor of Texas to his wedding) was damned good, but Penn was better.
