Sixth grade. I got in trouble becuase I got into an abortion debate with a nun. To the best of my recollection, I'd never heard the debate before, but it just seemed to me that there were extenuating circumstances that could forgive getting an abortion. I think I'd recently started having my period, and I knew that I could technically get pregnant at that point, and I knew that there was no way I was going to have a baby if I did.

My sister got in trouble when she was in eighth grade for reading the Secret Diary of Laura Palmer during a film in religion class. Same nun, though by that point she'd left the convent. The ex-nun, shocked and outraged at the content of the book, confiscated the book and sent a note home to my mother, who surely would be just as appalled. My mother wrote back that they'd been trying to get my sister to read on her own for years and that she could read whatever she wanted to. The stationary that my mom wrote the note on said "bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch" on the top. My mother hand delivered the note because she knew my sister would get in further trouble if she'd sent it through my sister.
