My best friend from junior high and high school is gay (natch...), and he told me he knew that he was gay for as long as he can remember -- as young as kindergarten. I think mileage may vary for this particular feature. (He is the ONLY person from high school that I still talk to -- God, high school sucked. But back to the riveting story.)
In high school, he was routinely called a fag (obviously, because it was high school). I, of course, would refute such claims by oh-so-articulately declaring, "Nuh- uh!!" (remember, it was high school) "You're just saying that because he plays the flute!" [Insert sophomoric joke here about how he plays the meat flute -- my husband has a horrible influence on me -- I'm so ashamed...]
When he "came out" to me, I just sort of shrugged and said "Oh." He was vastly relieved (I wasn't really surprised -- in fact, I was almost offended that he thought I might have a negative reaction!), but the first thing I thought about was all the breath I wasted on leveling charges of flutism against the name-callers. On balance, I guess I'd do the same thing again, though.
