I was kicked off the debate team for having a very public, very loud, very, very angry argument with the debate coach over whether it was appropriate for him to mandate to other team members that they wear the little feet pins that are the symbol of some anti-abortion group (Operation Rescue?). I took the dual position that it was inappropriate for a teacher to attempt to impose his ideology on students in this way (the arguement I believed in) and that it was unwise to possibly prejudice judges in competition (the arguement that almost prevailed).

In an interesting epilogue, as a freshman in college the next year I was roped into being a judge in a debate tournament sponsored by the college, since they were desperate for anyone with ANY debate experience at all. I sat on a judging panel with my former coach, and got to watch him seethe for an entire round.

Later, at a thank you party thrown for the students who volunteered to judge, I got to hear a story from a judge who just couldn't believe a contestant in one of her matches was wearing an anti-abortion pin, and she just couldn't get past that.

My only other run in with "the law" was receiving a paddling in fifth grade for possession of a contraband box of Sprees.
