Interestingly, at my HS, one of the debate coaches was kicked off the team by the admin. for attending the abortion rights march in DC (and letting the students become aware of that fact). Leaving the debate team in the hands of the other coach, who was fucking a couple of the 11th graders, but at least wasn't publicly advocating for abortion rights. (But he also smoked weed with us after class, so I guess he wasn't all bad.)
I grew up in a red state, if you didn't guess.
I once got suspended for missing a choir concert. Really, for like a week. Conductor told us about it in September, forgot to remind anyone or put it on the schedule, and only about 6 people (whom he'd called in a panic when he realized he had forgotten) showed up at the concert in March. Rest of us got "in house suspension," which meant we sat in the disciplinary dean's office all day. But, although it was stupid, it was so stupid I can't really count that as "getting in trouble;" certainly the dean didn't.
I did get a lecture on rejecting Jesus when my 3rd grade teacher caught me reading a book about witchcraft during some health movie. They'd probably expell me for it, now, because the book mentioned ceremonies involving knives and open flames, and you know where that leads.
