There is no argument for gay marriage, and the gays who argue for it are falling right into the right wing's trap. The real argument - which woiuld not make this such a marquis issue - is that gays deserve to have the their civil unions recognized and should get benefits like married couples. This is a reasonable argument and I think they'd succeed ultimately. However, the GOP right has changed the issue and used the "M" word to whip the red staters into a family values frenzy and the gays have played along.
I can only hope the gays are asking for marriage rights recognizing they'll never win, but knowing that such a request will net them a comprimise on recognition of civil unions and benefits. If that's their strategy, I say good idea, and good luck.
