That's genuinely surprising. And certainly not consistent with my experience of having been a veggie, or of having lots of veggie friends.

So if you're having guests for dinner, you actually handle meat and prepare it for them? (Or does Mr. Thrasher do that?) Wow. I would never expect a vegetarian host to serve something for me that would violate his or her belief system. It's not like going without meat for one meal is a supreme hardship.

Yes, I serve meat to my guests. I really don't know any other veggies (except my mom but she will occasionally have a little piece of ham..and I don't see her much anyway) and my husband isn't much of a vegetable fan (except potatoes, which don't really count) so I feel it would be rude of me not to serve meat to people.
There is nothing I can do to stop them from producing meat in this country. I don't have to like it, and I don't have to eat it, but I am not out to convert people either. I made a choice over 20 years ago to not eat meat (or fish, or eggs, or milk) -- other people make their own choices and I respect that. See how I said "choice" and not "religion" or "belief" -- we aren't talking about an uber-religious Jew serving porkchops to guests.
I will occasionally be the chef, but my husband will normally handle the meat cooking duties. I can't handle poultry, no exceptions -- I can smell it on my hands for a week. I will not cook fish in my house -- even before I went "veggie" I did not eat seafood..sensitive to smell, I guess. I think my husband prefers to cook the meat because I always dump Bud on everthing on the grill with wild abandon.
