on 1), yes, but on a much higher base. People would be laughing at the yankees if they had agreed to take on the full contract, less a couple million (union demand to sox), or even four million/year (sox final proposal). The Yankees got A-rod for $15-$17m/year. That's a lot more attractive than 23-25m/year.

and on 2), yes, and that's why the yankees were in a position to take on even what they did. I wish manny were a baller.
