 If your stove is electric, the saucepan doesn't even need to be nice (gas really needs a heavy pan though).  But it should be nonstick, expecially if you like to eat before cleaning the pan.  Non-nonstick pan + hour old rice = bad, bad things.
Also, the length of time for cooking does vary with the type of rice.  In particular, Uncle Bens requires a little longer on the simmer (18-20), and Adolphus is 15 minutes right on the money.
We have a rice cooker that we don't use except to make mass quantities for parties (when the burners on the stove are otherwise occupied) because it's such a pain in the ass to clean.  It's a regular cheap model, not the fuzzy logic.  It does make good rice, but not better than wonk's (except when I couldn't figure out that Uncle Ben's takes longer to cook).
