 I'll admit that I thought Dustin Hoffman was very good in Rainman.  He resisted to urge to chew all over the scenery and went with less is more as opposed to, say, Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump.
I do agree that the Hollywood tendency is to overreward those playing the dim-witted characters in movies.  I couple this with the reward beautiful women for looking ugly phenomenon of recent years.
