I think it has more to do with the fact that Hermes bags are made by hand by one person who places every stitch after punching the skin with an awl. The skins are custom dyed and specified by the customer.
But they're still not very functional (unless you don't need to get into them) and not at all attractive.
I'm more into Furla these days -- clean lines, yummy colors and price tags that are respectable but not outrageous. About ready to throw out all of my Dooneys and Coaches because the logo thing has become so annoying, though.
