It's a little like running a column by Donald Rumsfeld on Iraq and noting at the end that he was the Secretary of Defense in the Ford Administration. It's true, but. Let's just say that the editors of that site now full well who she is, and that no one would have run her column if she was simply an advisor on Iraq to the 1992 Clinton campaign. On the other hand, with the current eagerness to trash Clarke, maybe they would have.
I'm almost done with the Clarke book, and it holds up pretty well. Some of the most hyperbolic reaction has been to things that the media didn't report quite right. For example, he was quoted as describing Bush on the day after 9/11 (9/12, they called it) pressing Clarke and some others for links with Iraq. What the media did not report is that Clarke recalls defending Bush to the others with him after Bush left the room: "Look, he's the President. He has not spent years on terrorism. He has every right to ask us to look again, and we will, Paul." I haven't seen this reported anywhere, and it changes the gist.
