Sounds like singer-songwriter stuff is up your alley. None of these are "new" but If you haven't already tried them, they'll be new to you, right?
Of the top of my head, I'd suggest Lucinda Williams (Car Wheels on a Gravel Road), Lyle Lovett (I'd go with Live in Texas or Joshua Judges Ruth), Robert Earl Keen (my personal favorite is West Textures), or the Nields (Gotta Get Over Greta, Play, and If You Lived Here You'd Be Home Now are their rockier works).
Your digital music thingy should have a channel for this type of stuff. Some call it AAA (I forget what this stands for), some call it singer-songwriter, some call it alt-country.
