As far as the Darkness goes, I think some of their songs rock out (Love on the rocks with no ice), others not so much. But they're incredibly popular (you should see what the markup on their concert tickets is on eBay), recently won a major UK music prize, and on that basis alone are worth knowing about.
But damn, it's not like I suggested she go buy the new Tortoise CD (out this week) or Godspeed You Black Emperor or something.
Given PP's clarification on her tastes though, maybe she's right to follow your lead. I still think you both would like Modest Mouse though. And perhaps the Shins, if you're willing to give something a little more pop-ish a try by going down chutes too narrow.
ETA: I guess this answers your question Paigow. The Shins are definitely worth checking out.
