Something people should keep in mind: contractors could structure their lives so that they show up on time all the time. But, jobs take longer than you think, usually, as once you get started you find the hidden problems that no one could anticipate without blowing through the wall or digging the trench. So, they would have to build into their schedule enough blank time so that they could absorb the job-time over-runs. Since they usually figure out an hourly wage based on what they want in their pocket at the end of the month, their rates would just increase to keep that figure constant without blocking more time away from beer and football.

Oh, and coke, if they're plumbers.
