Movie Recs

Well, some recent (ish) horror movies worth seeing are:

Ginger Snaps
Devil's Backbone
Bubba Ho-Tep (but I don't think it's out on DVD yet)
Cemetary Man ('95, so pretty old)
May
Honogurai Mizu No Soko Kara (which I haven't seen, but is supposed to be an excellent old-fashioned ghost story - I think it got a European release as Dark Water)
Event Horizon (can't stop plugging this nice little haunted house movie)
Ravenous

Or, there are the classics, always worth catching up on, that are somewhat off the beaten path (or a random, off the top of my head, collection thereof):

Suspiria and/or Deep Red
The Beyond
Wicker Man (be sure to get the uncut version with lesbian sex and Britt Ekland's full, ridiculous naked dance, not the hacked up US release)
Don't Look Now
Cat People ('42 version - best use of shadow since Nosferatu, speaking of which)
Nosferatu
Phantasm (ridiculous movie, but it is shot so carefully and so beautifully)
Society
I Bury the Living
Basket Case (a funny gross-out movie, but weirdly compelling; there's a reason it's a cult classic, but the sequels all suck)
Cannibal Holocaust (for the serious horror buff only, if you can find it - it is still illegal in a lot of places. Important for its influence, which was significant)
Carnival of Souls (shot for about $1.50 in Lawrence Kansas)
