I'm trying to figure out whether I should hobble aroudn for a couple days until my knee feels better or whether this is one of htose ACL things and I need to make a doctor appointment.

I tore my ACL. I'd tell you about it, but what happens in Singapore, stays Singapore.
If you're having a lot of pain on the inner side of your knee and it hurts pushing off, it could just be torn cartilage. No surgery is fun, but that's the easiest of surgical fixes for your knee.
The problem is that you are having trouble straightening it. The ACL is the ligament that does a lot of that work. If you told me that your leg/knee gives out on you when you're going down stairs (and going down stairs was much harder than going up after I tore my acl), I'd say you have a tear.
Either way, it sounds like you have some damage in there and you need to get it looked at. And there are other ligaments that you may have damaged besides the ACL.
The good news is, depending on how active you are and how bad the tear is (if you have a tear) you may not need surgery at all. Strengthening the muscles around the knee and tendon can really help. The year* after my ACL surgery was the worst in my life. So, think about that and if the doctor insists on surgery, get a second opinion. Those fuckers can't wait to cut you open.

* Recovery time is no longer a year. It is amazing how quickly improvements in these procedures come about. Although, I will note that it will take quite awhile, no matter what, for you to be 100% (unless you're Jerry Rice).
