Even us transplants love the Marathon. So many traditions and characters. The Hoyts (father pushes the son in a wheelchair) have run for 23 years, the bandits, runners in costumes. Every year, everyone seems to know at least one person who's running. We all go out to cheer on friends, acquaintances, co-workers and the total strangers who catch our eye. This year I provided a valuable service while chained to my desk, kept getting calls from friends asking me to look up runners and check their splits in the BAA database. The cell phone out in Newton got passed around to total strangers while I dutifully typed in entry numbers.
I went to the NYC marathon once to spectate and was very disappointed. Periodic polite golf claps while everyone discussed where to do brunch.

Thanks! I probably won't run it again. At least I won't go out thinking I'm going to set any personal records. Chicago is too flat to train for Boston. It needs to pony up for a tit job.
