To answer your question, though, your wife (or you) should just say "I'm sorry but we won't be able to have you over this time" and give no explanation. They are asking YOU for a favor and you should not have to explain yourself for why you aren't granting what they want. If they demand an explanation, burst into tears and say you are having deep personal issues and are afraid that you might attack them with a butcher knife in the middle of the night.
