That's not consistent with the urban legend I heard, which is that the entire song is a literal transcription of an actual conversation that Mark Knopfler overheard between two blue collar workers while he was waiting for his SO to complete a transaction in a department store.
Obviously, he embellished it a bit, but having worked in the blue collar world, I can say the treatment of the subject matter rings true.
