I thought for a while that the presence or absence of a connection mattered to advocates and apologists on the right, but that was all window dressing and distraction. This administration and its supporters are operating from the premise that September 11, by being so unspeakably horrible, provides a blanket justification for any sort of abuse we care to dish out to anyone, innocent or not. Our status as victims absolves us from any moral responsibility, and any criticism is met with assertions of victimhood. Everything is permitted because we saw the bodies falling from the windows.
This is why no one pushing the war needs (or is particularly bothered by the lack of) a connection between September 11 and Iraq, or the animals who murdered Nick Berg and the prisoners in Abu Graib. We're not operating in a cause and effect universe anymore -- it's all about the saved and unsaved, believers and infidels. Our suffering has sanctified us and made us righteous in our fury. How can you argue with that?
