What's the problem? Ashcroft is trying to divert attention from his own problems by attacking the commission, and the commission is telling him to shut the fuck up. Slade Gorton (another Republican) essentially said the same thing, as reported at the end of the NYT article I posted earlier.

David Almasi, director of the black leadership group Project 21, noted that the NAACP never accepted Lott's apology, despite his repeated public pleas for forgiveness.

"But now, with Chris Dodd, nobody has really stepped forward to criticize him except conservatives who are pointing out the double standard," Almasi said. "And backhandedly yesterday, the NAACP gave him a seal of approval by having their Connecticut chapter say a private phone call [apology] is OK. Maybe he should go on BET."

The lack of outrage from the NAACP and other black groups indicates that it's merely a case of "political back-scratching" on the part of liberals, Almasi said.

"Dodd does essentially the same thing that Trent Lott did two years earlier and it's not an issue," Almasi said. "It just shows that when it comes to concern about insensitivity, it really depends on who you are."
