The Testimony
Drudge is reporting that 2 DEM members of the committee walked out during the Bush/Cheney testimony "to attend to prior commitments."

Last I heard, he was getting busted for something very much akin to what we all just did here. I think charges/allegations were dropped.

He (Johnson) used exactly the words I quoted: "aid and comfort to the enemy" (which to me certainly implies "unpatriotic") in the context of Kerry's criticisms of both Viet Nam and Iraq. Others said other things.

To me, it's the same tension that we see between national security, and civil liberties. We want safe flights, without intrusion. Can't happen, so we have to settle on a compromise of both. Kennedy said stupid things, strategically. I think that we should all describe him, publicly, as fat and stupid for doing so. But, unpatriotic? No. He is serving his vision of patriotism, being patriotic to the values that he thinks the country should embody. But he's still wrong, and stupid. Just not unpatriotic.
|
I wouldn't have much trouble with that argument, presented that way, but all too often it is presented in a simplistic formula which either expressly or implicitly accuses the critic of being unpatriotic.
Plus, if you're gonna start busting on politicians for being fat, just remember that bellies fom both sides jut out into the aisle.

I think he was saying that the fatness somehow related to Kennedy's making the comment. Which doesn't really make sense -- if being fat caused such comments, they'd be made by fat Republicans. If making such comments made one fat, there are some skinny people who should be fat and some fat people who should be skinny.
I think it was just a general term of abuse. I don't think there's been much bashing of the fat on the FB lately; he's probably having some kind of withdrawal or is "tripping out" and having "flashbacks," as the kids might say.

You're right. That's rude. I'll go with "stupid and venal." It still applies inter-aislely, but it's not so cheap-shottish.

Lloyds Wins In WTC Lawsuit
http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news...imM&refer=home
- April 29 (Bloomberg) -- London-based insurers led by Lloyds of London and seven other companies prevailed over World Trade Center leaseholder Larry Silverstein in a verdict that would limit his recovery for the Sept. 11 attacks, leaving the developer short of what he needs to rebuild at Ground Zero.
Jurors said they haven't been able to reach a verdict regarding Swiss Reinsurance Co., holder of $877.5 million, or about a quarter of Silverstein's $3.55 billion policy. U.S. District Court Judge Michael Mukasey told jurors to resume deliberations.
``This is an important case as are all cases, both civil and criminal,'' the judge told the panel. ``This trial involved a great investment of a great deal of time, effort and expenditure. If you fail to reach a verdict, this case will have to be tried again as to Swiss Re, and that will only serve to increase the cost to both sides.''
A jury of six men and five women concluded after seven days of deliberations in federal court in New York that the trade center insurance offered by Lloyds -- holder of $679 million of Silverstein's $3.55 billion policy -- and seven other insurers was governed by a form that defines the attacks by two hijacked jets as a single insurable loss. Silverstein had said the binding document was a different form, which doesn't define a loss occurrence and might have entitled the 72-year-old developer to almost double the policy's face amount by counting the attacks as two events.
The jury found that three of the insurers in the trial -- Royal Indemnity Co., Twin City Fire Insurance Co. and Zurich American Insurance Co. -- didn't offer coverage based on the form defining the attacks as one loss.

After the runup of how critical this testimony was, and how Bush was going to face a tough and damaging grilling, it's almost comical that Kerrey, of all people, ducks out mid-way so he can meet the Canadian prez instead.

Hmm. Sadly, because there's no recording or transcript, we'll never really know the whos, wheres or whys.
Pity, that.

Are you fucking kidding me? The Dems make the biggest fucking deal out of GWB and Cheney testifying together and then they don't even bother to stay for the full amount of time they are given to interview them?

One news service is reporting that it was recorded and will be transcribed but that much of what was discussed is classified.
FYI - it it also being reported that GWB spoke 90% of the time.
