Dude please. If the Timberwolves fail, ain't no one gonna beat down on the Lakers. And I hate the Lakers. I'm just hoping for retirement for the luckiest fucker on earth - Phil Jackson. Even I could have coached the talent he's had. And the trading of Kobe - since this is his official last season in LA. And Malone and Payton are on 1 year K's. Derek Fisher and Shaq are not a 2 man team. Next year baby!! It's all about next year!

I think I need Tivo

Due to a VCR programming error, I missed the first two-thirds of American Idol tonight. I take it the first songs (of which I only saw the brief snippets in the recap) were the contestants' selections? Because no way would the judges ever have picked "Saving All My Love for You" for Jasmine (though they might well have picked "Chain of Fools" for Fantasia).

Anyway, from my limited-to-the-last-song standpoint, nothing new to report. Jasmine is still a shouter who doesn't quite make all the high notes (and on each one she has to have her head cocked to the same precise angle--back and to her right--and her eyes closed). Diana is a shouter who is irredeemably ugly and can't dance. And Fantasia actually has some real talent (though I'd kind of like to fix her teeth).

Clive Davis is looking oddly preserved. Not like good-for-his-age, more like Vladimir Lenin in a glass box.

In other reality TV notes, is anyone else watching Colonial House? I am a total sucker for these things. Is it just me, or is this guy (bad picture) kind of hot?

Pants

So I am looking to buy some pants, and I go into a Banana Republic. From reading this board I know that pleated pants are verboten. So I look at the two styles offered: both plain-front pants with a low rise. Now, the low-rise thing is silly, especially on men, and especially if you just want a pair of pants to wear in a casual office. So I go to the clerk and ask, "Do you have a pair of plain-front pants with a normal rise?" He replies, "Of course," and takes me to the pants section. After peering at the signs on the two stacks of pants, and looking a bit like a yellow lab whose owner has just palmed the tennis ball, he says, "I guess we don't."

Then, in an apparent attempt to reassert his fashion sense, he tells me not to worry, as pleated pants will be returning to stores this very fall, due to customer demand for a more businesslike pant.

What the hell is going on here?

I will not accept the answer that I should just wear suits to work. When I do that for no reason, the other attorneys in my office ask me where I am interviewing. Besides, I've seen some suits without pleats or cuffs, and it just doesn't look right to me. I was sold on the chinos without pleats, but a suit should have cuffs.

I have decided to replace Bruce Springsteen with Katie Couric as number one on my list of "History's Greatest Monsters." If I have to hear about colonoscopies or post-partum disorder from her one more time, I'm going to catch a train to the City and stand behind the glass with a sign that says "Katie whips her children with extension cords".

CNN is impossibly dull; Fox is news for imbeciles (What is Mankow? Why is this fat moron DJ considered funny and worthy of doing bits on morning television?); ABC and CBS are not worth commentary here (Charles Gibson should have been euthanized around 1986); and as to the local news, suffice it to say, I don't give a shit about local housefires... I'm guess I'm doomed to keep watching the Headline News loops and flipping to VHI Classic occasionally to see if there's some amusing 80s video playing.

What you should be ashamed about is not that you went after a softball but that you foul tipped it into the catchers mitt.

Contestants chose first song, judges chose second song.

First song Jasmine sang sucked. Second song Jasmine sang sucked. Paula picked Jasmine's second song in what I would have thought would be an attempt to dilute her votes bc it isnt a crowd please and is obscure until I heard

Fantasia's second song which was maybe my second favorite AI performance of all time. Never heard this song. No idea what era it comes from or whose song it is but I cant imagine the original could beat Fantasia's performce. I listened to it a couple of times. Just great stuff. Then I went back and listened to her on the Big Band night. She is really the best performer they have ever had, even if she is kind of Donald Trumpy. Well, I guess she can back it up.

Diana. Did they pick Celine Dion so nobody would vote for her? Didnt Celine Dion get somebody knocked out or nearly knocked out pervciously? She can sing but it isnt a pleasant experience. She was positively screaming her last song, I dont know how she got props. It was the most painful performance I ever suffered through. My guess is she is gone bc of the Hawaiian Punch. I tried to vote for Fantaisa for an hour and could not once get through. I am guessing it is the same for the other two?

Is this an accurate summary of the Board Edict on pleated pants? I thought the prevailing sentiment was simply that pleated pants are not an effective disguise for those carrying a few extra pounds. Is it really necessary to be all flat-front, all the time in a business casual world? The other thing I do not get is why the BR drone said that customers are demanding pleated pants because they want a return to a more "business-like pant." I have nice wool flat front pants that are far more "business-like" than any pleated khakis are. Finally, on a related note, someone mentioned to me the other day that his rule is that you should not wear sport jackets with pants without a crease (so, I guess this means sport jackets only with pleated pants?). I violate this rule and will continue to do so. Is this going to cause more snickering behind my back then the silk neckerchief I am wearing today?

This guy is wrong. Pleated pants with sports jackets look too fussy, thereby obliterating the entire point of the jacket.

Very few men can wear a sports jacket without looking like someone's awkward football coach forced by his wife to dress up for once, or a country club khaki gin-and-tonic drone. But done right, they are very sexy.

Jack,

Pleated pants are NOT coming back for anyone under 70. Pleated pants or shorts are just shy of being as verboten as jeans shorts, or "jorts" as they're called here in pennsylvania, where colorful locals still wear them.

Pleated pants are ONLY acceptable with suits, and really only because many traditional suitmakers do not offer non-pleated versions. Many portly store clerks who like pleated pants will tell you they are more traditional" or more formal. Those Costanzas are wrong; non-pleated pants are in fact the more classic look. By way of conspicuous example, Sean Connery did not wear pleated pants in Dr. No, nor did JFK. Pleated pants are an invention of the 80s, and geared toward buyers who think they're "slimming." In fact, they actually make people look fatter than they are. For those of us without below-the-belt-stomachs, they leave a strange pouch of fabric which does not go away, no matter how much you have the pants tapered.

When buying pants, consider how pleated pants look on women. You will not see a young, with-it woman wearing pleated pants, because they'll make her look like a marsupial. You'll only see women who've let themselves go to pot wearin "mom pants." This should be an indicator to you to avoid pleated pants.

Hope it helps,
SD

I don't know. He is infinitely less funny than Horatio Sanz. He's based out of Chicago and I DON'T KNOW A SINGLE PERSON WHO LISTENS TO HIM. Not one. If people want shock jockage, they turn to Stern.

I listen to ESPN's Mike and Mike in the morning.

Actually, WGN TV's morning news can be hilarious at times.
