I cannot link to this at work (sheesh). Does it connect at all with Philly being the least attractive people place?

it's not on the menu, but do you think they'd fry me up some pickles, i mean if I was a regular and all? If you're set up to deep fry green beans, you are set up to fry pickles.

The fried Mac & Cheese balls that Ollie posted look pretty good, though.

well there are, but the few newer places are all chains. and as Fringey points out, they may be perfectly acceptable in quality.
but here is the problem, we are entertaining clients in from out of town later this week. I scheduled a dinner at the new steakhouse, and it isn't giving them a local flavor at all- they could go to Notbob's town, or your town or many other towns and get the same menu.
i think that is sad.

sure, we're the kings of mid-eastern, but that's lunch, and most of those places don't serve wine/liquor.

I'm glad that this isn't a pervasive problem though out the country. I think we vie with San Francisco for having the most restaurants per capita in the nation. With the exception of a few of the usual suspect steakhouses, almost all of the upscale restaurants here are local.

Without making any comments as to quality/level, I thought DFW had the most per capita?
It probably all turns on how you outline the geography, like a lot of things.

I would like to think that this is proof that, although Detroit is bigger, Minneapolis is hipper. But I think the truth is that you are not looking hard enough. I mean, maybe you need to break out of the steakhouse scene.

The NYT loves PDX.
Yeah, we've got the standard chain steakhouses. But we've also got much better, and oh-so-local.

Article on most restuarants per capita in cities and states and the mythical pot-friendly northern home of hockey lovers. The number one state (not including D.C.)? Montana, baby! When I think Montana, I think foodie.

I knew how much weight to give this article when I read this:
"An article in the Dining section on Sept. 26 by Eric Asimov reported on the restaurant scene in Portland, Ore., and one of the establishments mentioned was Paley’s Place, owned by Vitaly and Kimberly Paley. Mr. Asimov said it had “a warm and intimate dining room” and that Paley’s Place “is recognized as one of the top restaurants in the Northwest, if not the country.” He also wrote that Paley’s Place was one of several restaurants that had “served as an incubator for much of the talent that is making its mark today.”
Mr. Asimov is a friend of the Paleys, and while doing reporting for the article in Portland, he selected wines for a dinner he attended at Paley’s Place, which promoted his presence in advance.
Even though Mr. Asimov was not reviewing or assessing the restaurant, he should have disclosed in the article his friendship with the owners, and he should not have created the appearance of favoritism toward them by participating in the wine dinner, for which he accepted no compensation."
I assume that Mr. Asimov can also persuasively explain why the Yankees are as close to the abstract Platonic Ideal of sports team-ness as exists, conveniently without revealing that he is Jeter's lover.

cite, please?
A guy I know who knows a lot of odd trivia mentioned once that Ithaca, NY has the fewest fast food restaurants per capita. NYC was second on that list.
Though it's possible that he is/was full of shit.

He may have been engaged in hot sweaty animal 3-somes with the Paleys. But Paley's Place still rawks.

Jezis, man, how old is that article? Lespinasse has been closed for YEARS (thus proving another point in the article.)

And in an odd twist of fate, Los Angeles has the most capita per restaurant.*
