Damn you're good - I have indeed lived in Chicago.

I have had the pleasure of spending significant time in Southern Indiana and less significant time in Northern Michigan and in Iowa. Midwest? Much of upstate New York is oddly reminiscent of Southern Indiana.

Let's face it, most of the rust upstate has fully decayed and blown away. These days, it's farmland punctuated by ruins, with the occassional minor college or university (e.g., Syracuse, Hobart) nestled in the ruins and odd little suburbs adrift in the netherworlds between. The difference between eating white bread in the whistestop cafe in Southern Indiana farmland or Southern Tier New York farmland is insignificant.

What do you define as upstate? Some even classify Rockland as upstate even though it is only 25 miles outside of the city. I do not define Rockland County as upstate.

Poughkeepsie although Vassar itself is a nice campus Poughkeepsie is a pit with Route 9 a strip mall in essence.

When we were in Columbia County that was nice. Nicer than Dutchess. I miss Chatham.

That being said I loved Chicago it was great with its wide avenues and concept of space less crowded than TCOTU.

I also have a girlfriend who lives in South Bend.

Fayetteville possibly is TX-East, but Little Rock is south, I think. I think Richmond plus Little Rock plus North Carolina equals time in the south, while if I just had Fayetteville and Arlington, VA, I possibly couldn't claim the south.

Indiana, Columbus, Cincinnati. None of those are the least bit like Chicago (though they would like to be, I'm sure). Arkansas is not substantially different from Texas. I say we tie. You also missed out on Pennsylvania, if I recall correctly, but I won't lord that over you because I moved away when I was 8, so it doesn't really count. What age did you leave NY state??

ETA: Who here has lived in more parts of the country than I have? Anyone? As far as I can tell, the only parts I've missed (of the continental US, that is) are the deep south, though I got tastes of that in Texas, and the northwest. I know everything there is to know about all other parts of the country. Everything.
did you know there are salmon in Lake Michigan?

AoN, Communist Radio had a bit about a similar issue the other day. Flint, MI is foreclosing on abandoned houses and turning them into parks or other green areas, in an attempt to downsize gracefully. Presto, changeo - now we're rural!

it's like AA; take it one day at a time, and pretty soon you're holding a 10 year pin.

The post-college Chicago people were pretty damn midwestern. We moved away from NY state when I was 8, but we came back every summer, all summer, for the next 4 or 5 years. See above re: central AR vs. football-heaven Fayetteville, and if Dallas counts as TX then Little Rock counts as south.

If you really want to tie, I will cede the midwest.

Should only take a few weeks.

When I started walking at lunch and running on weekends only took a few weeks to stop aching and feeling sore.

Wait. Fayetteville, AR, or Fayetteville, NC?

If the latter, I think you get not just Southern "claiming" privileges, but also an I Escaped The South Notwithstanding Impossible Odds merit badge.

I was speaking of Fayetteville, AR, where I have not lived but have visited. I also have not lived in, but have visited a lot, Northern VA which to me is very, very different from Richmond.
