Yeah, that too. And the really fake stuff, like using cell phones within CIA headquarters to transmit top secret info, where, not suprisingly, CIA in reality bans them for just this reason.
Maybe I was young and naive when Alias started, but the first season and a half (until the post-Super Bowl show with Jennifer Garner as bikini-clad seductress) was semi-plausible. Since then, not so much, and increasingly so.
As for new shows, any sense on Desperate Housewives? The ads make it look mildly watchable, but those same ads make Joey look like the new laugh riot.

Secular weddings
The bride of the wedding that I'm performing later on this year sent me a link to an article from Slate about the increase in popularity of secular cermonies.
http://slate.msn.com/id/2107004/ Selected quotes:
Quote:
What sets these secular celebrations apart from traditional rituals is their focus on the individuals. In the past, people didn't need ritual to speak to them personally; if it was part of their religion, it was inherently meaningful. Today, with confidence in our institutions eroding, authority and belief come—for many people—from self and personal experience.
...
These days, anyone with Internet access can be legally ordained by the Universal Life Church. The challenge, then, is to create ceremonies that rise above the cliched and hokey and to fashion ceremonies that are meaningful, personalized, and imbued with a strong sense of community and history. Given that many people have fled religion in part because of rituals that seemed hollow, secular officiants need to keep what they do original and not allow anything to become routine. If they can manage that, they'll have made a valuable contribution to the new religion of personal spirituality.

Should someone actually be crazy enough to want to spend the rest of their life with me, I'm pretty sure that I don't want to get married in the Catholic Church (and I'm not sure that they'd accept me as a qualified bride at any rate) and I wouldn't really be comfortable with another denomination, I think. I could see going to a JP or Vegas or whatever and getting it over and done with, but I'm sort of attracted to creating a simple, short ceremony that's a little more personal to me, my putative spouse, and our friends and family.
The bride sent me a sort of run down of what she's looking for in the ceremony that I'm performing, and given who she is and what we're doing, I think it will be lovely. There will be a lot of involvement from the rest of the attendees, and I think it will end up being a very nice (short) community celebration of their marriage.

Has there been a sudden re-reversal of your sexuality here*, or has hell frozen over and the church now endorses same sex marriages and I just missed it?
So confused.

I'll adopt you, flinty. I warn you though that my maternal instinct is fairly limited, so it's likely that most of my parenting will be done by the Open Beer Bottle, Lighted Cigarette method. We'll have great family trips to Vegas though.

Oh, the stories I could tell about my brother-in-law's mandatory psychiatry rotation...
After his handling of some transsexual counseling, he was promptly given a waiver from the rest of his psychiatry rotation.

I just skim over the posts relating to tv shows I don't watch, and as I scanned the word "blackmail" in this post, it reminded me of the following:
The other night, I was reading to my oldest boy (aged 6), and the word "blackmail" came up. When I come across a word I suspect he might not know, I ask if he knows what it means. He didn't know what it meant, and so I explained it to him. I must not have done a very good job of it, because he couldn't understand why that wasn't a perfectly good way of making money.
On the other hand, maybe I've got a SOOOOPER genius on my hands (a la Wile E. Coyote).

Joey is actually pretty good. Kind of a Rhoda or a Jeffersons, as opposed to an After MASH or Hello Larry.
Heck, it may even become a Fraiser, but it's too soon to tell.

We in the wrong bidness
Quote:
The other variety of customer approach I've learned to dread is the coming of the "late night drunken slut." Whatever their motivation for coming up to me, all late night drunken sluts seem to break the ice with me by saying the same thing: "Are you in a bad mood? Can't you smile?" Any breakdown in my bouncerly facade will open the floodgates here. If I smile, laugh, or respond with a straight answer, there's no telling what unpleasant surprises I'm in store for at this point in the evening. I learned this yet again on Saturday night.
"Hey, why do you look so angry? Can't you smile?"
"Yeah, I can smile. Here you go."
"See? It's not that hard," she said, awkwardly adjusting her bra and skirt. "Do you want to see my tattoo?"
"Sure, why not."
This one proceeded to turn around and drop her skirt and panties around her ankles, unveiling for me the pride of her existence: A tattoo of Elmer Fudd following rabbit tracks which led directly into her butthole.

As if there were any doubt
Damn, I'll say. Quote from the long post Rice made on the Amazon board where readers review book:
Quote:
Getting really close to the subject matter is the achievement of only great art. Now, if it doesn't appeal to you, fine. You don't enjoy it? Read somebody else. But your stupid arrogant assumptions about me and what I am doing are slander. And you have used this site as if it were a public urinal to publish falsehood and lies. I'll never challenge your democratic freedom to do so, and yes, I'm answering you, but for what it's worth, be assured of the utter contempt I feel for you, especially those of you who post anonymously (and perhaps repeatedly?) and how glad I am that this book is the last one in a series that has invited your hateful and ugly responses.

Don't you just hate it when people misunderstand the concept of free speech? Gotta love the way she juxtaposes that with the image of a public urinal, though.

Let's pretend I'm not as lesbian
Hot guy at gym has been flirting with me for about a month now. Stupid little things like noticing how I dry my hair. I know that he has a baby due in January or February, but I don't know the status of his relationship with the baby's mother. Do I bang him?
(Related story: I'm very close to strangling the father of a two week old. Father and mother dated for a year and a half, he kept on telling mother that he was getting divorced, it wasn't gonna be long, even went so far as to pick out an apartment where "they" were going to raise the baby, but never moved in. Stopped calling somewhere during the pregnancy, but she tried to maintain a relathionship for sake of kid. He shows up for birth but "has to go to work" shortly thereafter. Baby is a week old when he says that he's still living with his wife. His wife and mother have been very supportive of new mom's plight. Asshole needs to be strung up and stoned.)
Also, am I the only person surrounded by pregnant and newly hatched people? Dear god, it seems like every other person I run into is announcing an upcoming birth. I've been buying a lot of target gift certificates lately.
