Essentials for me would be: Seasons 1 and 2 Buffy. Seasons 3 and 4 X-Files. Aladdin (just came out last week), Aliens, The Big Lebowski, Blazing Saddles, Bull Durham, Casablanca, Clerks, Clue, Die Hard (my favorite Christmas movie), Donnie Darko, Empire of the Sun, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Fifth Element, Fight Club, A Fish Called Wanda, Ghostbusters, Heathers, the Indiana Jones Box Set minus Temple of Doom, both Kill Bills, LA Confidential, Last of the Mohicans, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, the Lord of the Rings trilogy (extended versions), the first Matrix, Moulin Rouge!, the Muppet Movie, Office Space, Playing by Heart, The Princess Bride, Pulp Fiction, Raising Arizona, Real Genius, Robin Hood (Disney version, not Kevin Costner abomination), The Royal Tennenbaums, Run Lola Run, Rushmore, Say Anything..., Silence of the Lambs, Silverado, Snatch, So I Married an Axe Murderer, Some Like it Hot, The first Star Wars Trilogy, The Terminator, Thelma and Louise, Tom Jones, True Romance, The Usual Suspects, Victor Victoria, and Young Frankenstein.

I think the key to distinguishing "nice sandals we like" from "crappy hippy/beach sandals we hate" is to condone "dress shoes (including open dress shoes with straps)" or something like that. Agreed that there can be no separate prohibitions for the kankled/pedicure challenged other than those dictated by their own common sense. I think you do not have jurisdiction over pantyhose, though you might pick it up by default if there is no undergarment subcommittee.

I was so busy being shocked that the Bush women crossed their legs at the knees that I didn't think about the openness of the daughters' shoes. Alas, gone are the days when you could at least count on the proper wives of southern politicians to cross their legs like ladies.

Wouldn't Grand Prix or Ronin (which I accidently left off the above list) work just as well, with slightly better plots? John Frankenheimer definitely knew how to direct car chases and he was very good about getting the sound right.

I can only tell you which ones we have, because I can't really say I have a "must have" list, as I only recently got a DVD player, and was doing all right without it, but I digress. Here is the DVD selection chez dtb:

  The Shawshank Redemption
  Babette's Feast (there was an article referencing this movie in the food section of the NYT this week, and I was so heartened to discover that there are others -- well, at least one other person --who love this movie, and "feel" it as deeply as I did -- that sounds corny, but there it is)
  Sense & Sensibility (the Emma Thompson version)
  Trading Places
  Simpsons (random seasons)
  Sponge Bob - Season One (I know, this is very low-brow, but I can't help it -- I think it's hilarious)
  The Office (my most oft-lent DVD, by the way)

  Spirited Away (a kids' movie -- but awesome)

I will probably buy Sweet Home Alabama -- not because it's a particularly good movie (or even a little good), but I could stare at the dude who plays the southern husband all day long...

Ronin and Bullitt (which I am now adding to the list - thank you both for triggering this one for me) have the best car chase scenes ever. imho
