My DVD collection pretty much consists of the following: the complete box set of the Avengers tv series, various Audrey Hepburn movies, Trading Places, Top Secret!, To Die For, and the complete Inspector Morse collection. It's ok but rather sad. My husband (from whom I'm separating (amicably)) has the larger collection (and is justifiably hanging on to it)) and so I'm going be buying in the near future. I'm just curious to see what other people regard as essentials. thanks.

Oh - I'm going to get Office Space.
Snatch
Trading Places
Godfather Trilogy (although I & II are on tv so much that I guess you don't really need this one, but I feel better having it)
Shawshank
Seven

I haven't thought that far in advance, i've only seen hald an episode, but I will make an attempt... these people all have unresolved issues and that's why they are in limbo. The dead dead people don't... ?

1. Set of all three ex versions LOTR discs
2. Bootleg Jimmy Buffet Jamaica concert
3. Downhill Racer (not all that good - I just really like it)
4. Intermediate Snowboarding Techniques
5. Days of Thunder

---------------------------

Sorry to hear that. Hope it all works out for the best.

It is called sarcasm.

If people want to continually talk about doing lines of cocaine out of the assholes of board regulars, that is cool with me. I will probably make fun of it, though.

I have 175 movies and 18 TV series box sets.

Essentials for me would be: Seasons 1 and 2 Buffy. Seasons 3 and 4 X-Files. Aladdin (just came out last week), Aliens, The Big Lebowski, Blazing Saddles, Bull Durham, Casablanca, Clerks, Clue, Die Hard (my favorite Christmas movie), Donnie Darko, Empire of the Sun, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Fifth Element, Fight Club, A Fish Called Wanda, Ghostbusters, Heathers, the Indiana Jones Box Set minus Temple of Doom, both Kill Bills, LA Confidential, Last of the Mohicans, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, the Lord of the Rings trilogy (extended versions), the first Matrix, Moulin Rouge!, the Muppet Movie, Office Space, Playing by Heart, The Princess Bride, Pulp Fiction, Raising Arizona, Real Genius, Robin Hood (Disney version, not Kevin Costner abomination), The Royal Tennenbaums, Run Lola Run, Rushmore, Say Anything..., Silence of the Lambs, Silverado, Snatch, So I Married an Axe Murderer, Some Like it Hot, The first Star Wars Trilogy, The Terminator, Thelma and Louise, Tom Jones, True Romance, The Usual Suspects, Victor Victoria, and Young Frankenstein.

ETA answer the actual question.

Top five of these would probably be (subject to my whim).

Terminator
Clue
Raiders of the Lost Ark
The Princess Bride and
Tom Jones

My list:

1. and 2. LOTR ex versions (currently only I and II)
3. Spinal Tap
4. Shawshank
5. Black Hawk Down

Personally, I love the pompadour and 3 inch high boots. I think everyone will be wearing them in the future.
Is that a man or a woman? I thought he was a dude, but maybe I missed something...

Holy shit! An on-topic post

There was a lot of bitching about it, and now it's up to be reviewed. I guess it was decided that since I routinely break the policy, I should be tortured with rewriting it.

The biggest issue is "open toed shoes" and whether or not sandals can be considered work appropriate. There is apparently a lot of confusion as to what constituted a sandal. Fortunately, the sub-committee is packed with like-minded individuals who feel strongly that there is such a thing as a work-appropriate sandal. Especially given that we work in Houston, Texas and it gets fucking hot as hell here. The "can slides and mules be work appropriate" question fortunately has been resolved (yes you can wear them, but be mindful of noise). I am not sure if hose/stockings are in the jurisdiction of the sub-committee.
I am so jealous.

I think the key to distinguishing "nice sandals we like" from "crappy hippy/beach sandals we hate" is to condone "dress shoes (including open dress shoes with straps)" or something like that. Agreed that there can be no separate prohibitions for the kankled/pedicure challenged other than those dictated by their own common sense. I think you do not have jurisdiction over pantyhose, though you might pick it up by default if there is no undergarment subcommittee.

I was so busy being shocked that the Bush women crossed their legs at the knees that I didn't think about the openness of the daughters' shoes. Alas, gone are the days when you could at least count on the proper wives of southern politicians to cross their legs like ladies.

dvd -thanks

lots of food for thought - thanks everyone.

Why I don't have Say Anything by now is beyond me. Same with Princess Bride. I will remedy that.

Wouldn't Grand Prix or Ronin (which I accidently left off the above list) work just as well, with slightly better plots? John Frankenheimer definitely knew how to direct car chases and he was very good about getting the sound right.

I can only tell you which ones we have, because I can't really say I have a "must have" list, as I only recently got a DVD player, and was doing all right without it, but I digress. Here is the DVD selection chez dtb:
  • Office Space
    The Shawshank Redemption
Babette's Feast (there was an article referencing this movie in the food section of the NYT this week, and I was so heartened to discover that there are others -- well, at least one other person --who love this movie, and "feel" it as deeply as I did -- that sounds corny, but there it is)
Sense & Sensibility (the Emma Thompson version)
    Trading Places
    Simpsons (random seasons)
Sponge Bob - Season One (I know, this is very low-brow, but I can't help it -- I think it's hilarious)
The Office (my most oft-lent DVD, by the way)
    LOTR Trilogy
Spirited Away (a kids' movie -- but awesome)

I will probably buy Sweet Home Alabama -- not because it's a particularly good movie (or even a little good), but I could stare at the dude who plays the southern husband all day long...

Now that I've read everyone else's lists, I will give my oh-so-coveted endorsement to the following selections:
  • Crouching Tiger
    Fight Club
    Kill BillS
    Usual Suspects
    Spinal Tap
Princess Bride (I actually have this -- but on tape, so technicaly, I couldn't include it in my prior list -- I'm a stickler for rules -- except for the one about answering your question -- you know, the FIVE thing?)

Not as big a fan of GP cars, and I've not seen Ronin. (Guess I should, huh?)

(Good grief, BTW, I don't watch Cruise movies for the PLOT!)

Ronin and Bullitt (which I am now adding to the list - thank you both for triggering this one for me) have the best car chase scenes ever. imho
