Thanks for clarifying. I was a little hurt that you might be mocking my fond childhood memories. I'm glad your children will have the opportunity to develop "small town" memories of their own. Everytime I look at my first pony (thankfully still living) I'm reminded of all those wonderful childhood memories astride him...racing the local boys on their bikes, riding down creeks trying to find their sources, getting caught on the train tracks a la Stand By Me....our first ride all the way out to the Bull Run Battlefields...oh to be a little kid again and able to spend my days galloping around on my pony!

He truly is one of the great underrated 1st basemen who isn't playing it because it's-the-end-of-his-career-and-he-can't-field-anymore-but-we-need-a-guy-to-hit-homers-guy.

One question - how does this help him to understand why the Yankees lost? I mean, they lost because the Sox beat them (dare I say it) fair and square. So ... in an unfair world that overly favors him he is reasonable to expect the Yanks to win, and a "life isn't fair" speech doesn't explain why they lost.

I know, logic isn't the main point. But, when I had this particular trauma in my own childhood (my favorite team beaten, badly, by the Dallas Cowboys after a miraculous year of playing way above themselves), the explanation I got wasn't the one about fairness, it was the one about "good guys don't always win no matter what happens on the 6 million dollar man."

We had a weekend house when I was a kid. I think it probably made us closer as a family, because all six of us would go every single weekend unless my dad was on-call. There weren't any other kids around, so we didn't really have a choice but to play with each other. Though we grew up in the middle of the city, we also spent a good part of our childhood in the country. I think it made us well rounded. I still use it maybe once or twice a month, and I think having that escape helps keep me sane.

You misunderstand. His stock "it isn't fair" protest in response to the loss was what prompted the speech this morning, but my speech has limitless applications. He wasn't saying they didn't lose fairly -- his view is that "it's not fair because I wanted the Yankees to win; therefore, I am being treated unfairly because I didn't get what I want".

In fact, the actual "why they lost" news (i.e., that they played like a bunch of pikers) was delivered by his father. He readily accepted that explanation.

When they tore down Comiskey, there was some charity thing where you could buy banks of seats from the stadium. Some guy I worked with at the time convinced a whole group of us to buy a bunch of them.

Somewhere, in a warehouse in Chicago, are 4 seats from Comiskey owned by me.
