Men's B-Ball lost too. The whole dream team crap was to puff the NBA for international merchandise sales, right? Hopefully the NBA sales drop, with James' jerseys being clearence priced across Europe. And next time, maybe they'll bring a team. Argentina shot 50% from the 3 point line, everyone killed them with open 3's. Not to be a homer, but do you think Prince could have helped at least guard one guy?

That's not really the logical conclusion of my post, but I guess it's okay to miss this, since I wasn't testing you.
Tests often test your ability to remember something and spit it back. They usually aren't designed to find out how you think about something or even the real process behind your thoughts and answers. That is why I say they are limited in what they actually test. They are a good measure of a certain kind of intelligence. Do I have to add, "in my opinion" to everything?
In my opinion, I think papers require you to use lots of different types of skills.
I can't believe that you would translate my post into "test takers are dumber than paper writers." Whatever.

Meanwhile, I'd eliminate close encounters from the list altogether. A few UFOs does not sci-fi make. What do you have: a crazy guy on a quest. Other similarly crazy people. Climb a mountain while the US army can't find you. See a spaceship land and an alien barely appear. And that's it? The movie had no payoff, no explanation, no anything. If close encounters counts as sci-fi, then I nominate every Simpsons with Kang and Kodos involved.

On the other hand, they generally have more relevance to the course you took. At least in LS, it seemed that once the paper topic was picked, which had to occur in the first few weeks to allow for adequate procrastination, there was no point in coming to class, not even relevance to the paper. At least the test related somewhat closely to the class itself.
Bottom line for me: I liked being done with tests, but got more out of papers. As for essay tests, they were the worst, because it rewarded regurgitating facile points that you prepped for, sort of, so it neither tested your knowledge gained from the class nor your ability to spend time researching and thinking out an issue. Besides, nothing is worse than a 24-hour take-home final.

It was a joke some time ago. Yesterday's game was just a tease. The rest of the world is lucky that we exported 1980s basketball, not 2004 NBA-style ball.

The most interesting charactres? The two body shaveers with bjorn borg style bandannas who wore sunglasses twenty four seven and highlighted their hair? They were the most groanworthy individuals I have ever witnessed. on tv.
I love this show more and more- I didnt think this season would be watchable the first few episdoes, but I found my selef quite upset when my Tivo taped something decidedly not BB5 last saturday. though it wasnt hard to figure out who would get put up.
we hae the jesus twins with their god told me to be racist and condescending. We have marvelous marvin who is hilarious when you can understnad what he says. I like nakomis, in spite of the bad hair, cowboy is possibly the most brain dead individual on the planet and that is excellent for reality tv, karen is smarter than she seems and diane is dumber than she thinks. its good stuff.
and
SPOILER
I cant wait for the footage of Queen Will and Reverend Natalie alone in the jury house. I really wanted him to win but will gun for nakomis or marv in this absence. so glad marv got HOH-who will he put up? He cant put up Adria bc that ensures two votes against him if he gets two final two. i woud never put up stupid cowboy bc its probably easy to manipulate him. Drew is a big threat so he shoudl get put up. i would put him and diane up against eachother.

No argument here. But I'm not going to be fighting anyone for more class time.

I felt just as satisfied, if not more handing in a paper before going to drink than finishing a test before getting toe-up. But I find I retained more when I wrote a paper the night before handing it in than when I crammed for a test the night before I took it.

Because you just know a certain percentage is actually using like 12 of those hours to complete it, unlike you and me who tackle it 2 hours before it needs to be handed in?

"Shoot the J! Shoot it!"
I was actually referring to the hoops game. Where the fuck was LeBron? Why did Ginobili have 28 by the third quarter? Why was Fabio looking like George Gervin finger rolling over everyone? Why did Richard Jefferson get absolutely EMBARASSED on the last play of the game, by a guy who looks like he should be playing for Boca Juniors? Why Bilmore, why?

After screenplay, the most important aspect of a sci-fi movie is its art direction. This being the case, and putting the rather soapy screenplay to one side, Star Wars wins hands down. Instead of presenting the future* as being better, cleaner, and more technological than the present, it was dirty and unreliable. When the Millenium Falcon broke down, you could imagine from the sets and art direction that it wasn't because its basic technology was too complicated (as in 2001, which also had good art direction in its own way), but because it was a busted piece of crap.
Star Wars gave the future the right to be dirty, noisy and chaotic after 2001. It made the art direction of Blade Runner possible.
*Yeah, yeah, I know.
|
If this is your criteria, then you need also to consider RoboCop. Admittedly cheesy, and not the greatest special effects, but dirty, noisy and chaotic? No doubt.

Movies All Ya'll Forgut
How about Clockwork Orange? Kubrick's certainly got claim to best sci-fi director.
Or, for movies with humor, Sleeper or Dr. Strangelove.
Old Classics: Metropolis. Journey to the Center of the Earth. The Invisible Man.

I like Blade Runner. I think it's a hell of a film. But the best? I'm not sure... I think maybe Aliens was the best sci-fi film ever made. But I'm not a scientist.
|
Hard to argue with Blade Runner, but personally I'm a fan of the cheesy 50's era sci-fi Red Scare movies like The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Thing From Another World. The Thing is just a great story, and the 80's John Carpenter version of that movie was also well done...

Except for the mashed potato scene, which will live forever in the realm of great movie scenes.
