Next thing you know Roadrunner jeans or those blue pants with the stripes down the side that everyone wore in grade 9 will be chic. It's a cop-out by the fashion industry and it bugs me that people buy into it.

eta that I have never owned Ugg boots. my friends did when I was young though. I think they are beyond ugly.
Ugg boots are beyond ugly, but they are incredibly warm and, for the warmth level, not that pricey (or weren't back when I got mine, years and years ago when I lived in a cold place, for utilitarian purposes).

However, I no longer live anywhere that gets cold enough to merit the Ugg boots -- and still I see them. Ugh.

I remember a crocheted polyester yarn white and light blue and dark blue poncho I had in grade school. I'm also remember something yellow and orange and brown, but I'm pretty sure that was a crocheted afghan, not a poncho. In both cases, not so attractive.

In sum, Uggs are ugh-ly but I will make an exception for utilitarian, rather than fashion, use and ponchos are also ugh-ly.

I thought I was over being sick but the level of sense in this post, combined with my inability to figure out the algebra of a gross-up payment, makes me think maybe not completely better yet.

ETA it's not the sickness, it's the medicine that's making me stupider than normal, and those ugg ponchos actually look kind of good to me right now -- my neighbor and I are disagreeing on the proper temp for our (same-thermostat) offices and it's freezing in here.

I recommend a heating pad. I've been using one all day because I managed to pull my back this weekend, but it has the added benefit of making my normally frigid office quite bearable.

I also managed to bonk my head on a palm frond over the weekend, but I don't think anything but time will make the lump go away.

I think I need to stop doing yard work.

Well, DUH. You're supposed to talk to it, not keep walking into it.

[Ugg boots and ponchos ]
Every season or so there is some fashion-victim-y thing that, if you take a step back and look at it with fresh eyes, is just objectively ludicrous. Who, in all honesty, believed the whole "low-riders are more flattering to all figures!!" BS? Will you believe it when someone tries to reintroduce tapered legs? Uggs and ponchos are like that - mass psychosis is the only explanation.

More distressing, to me, are the things that might actually be flattering that are determined to be "in," and therefore you know will be "out" next season. Rather a lot of shoe-fashions are like that (including the current "pointy toe out/round toe in" thing, which has half the population saying "thank god, shoes I can get my wide feet into" and the other half saying "damn, I look like I'm wearing cinderblocks"). Or like the little tweed suits that have been around for the last couple of years. They are cute as hell, but you know a lot of them will look pretty dated in a few years just because of their current overexposure.

BR(recently got one with a satin ribbon tie at the front - yes, Tom Ford is the anti-Christ, I know)C

Oh. Well then, here's tip. A space heater in your office will fake the thermostat into thinking that it's unbearably hot in the entire office and kick the air conditioner into high gear. Thus freezing your neighbor. Kind of like "payback."

Just a friendly tip.

Uh, I pushed it up a degree so that I won't be so cold. I have no reason to torture the coworker. But I will "keep" your "tip" in "mind."

Sometimes, it's like I don't know you at all.

Who needs a reason?

Britney should have had someone proof her "open letter to fans" before she posted it on her website. I give you this gem (hope it hasn't been posted already):

"My prerogative right now is to just chill & let all of the other overexposed blondes on the cover of Us Weekly be your entertainment... GOOD LUCK GIRLS!!"

Does she even know what part of speech the word prerogative is?

Oh, God, yes. We're talking about a totally outrageous paradigm.

Excuse me, but "proactive" and "paradigm"? Aren't these just buzzwords that dumb people use to sound important? Not that I'm accusing you of anything like that.

I do not understand. "Prerogative" is a noun, right? And, in the above-quoted sentence, it seems like she is using it as a noun. I'm not saying that this is conclusive proof that she knows what part of speech it is, but I think it creates a presumption.

2.
I live in a cold place. My feet are susceptible to frost bite. Uggs are great for taking the dog out. She doesn't care if it's cold, she has a fur coat.

Very few cold weather garments are fashion friendly. Even puffy down coats are ugly. Warm but ugly.

Ponchos aren't even utilitarian. When I was 6 I loved the yellow one my grandmother made for me. But I wasn't carrying a purse or a knapsack then.

Do you even know what alphabet you are using?

Brit split an infinitive, too.

And, finally, ponchos fit over knapsacks. Backpacks. Hmmm . . . are those really two distinct items, or is this a jimmies/sprinkles thing?

"Someday" you "might." It was just an FYI. We had thermostat wars for several months before the firm made space heaters illegal. The worst offenders were the ones with the thermostats in their office.

1. Glad to see that Britney herself agrees that she's overexposed.

2. Suggested definition: Prerogative (n) -- Someone who's destined to be Rogaine-dependant in the future

Fashion update - decent looking cold weather gear

While I admit that the large majority of what you see out there is pretty bad, I maintain that there are some quite good looking cold-weather garments. Besides fur. Some of the down coats are being made with trim proportions, rather than making one look like the stay-puft/Michelin man - and there are rather sleek quilted coats with thinsulate or something that doesn't have the bulk of down. And some of the over-the-knee boots that were around last year/year before had nice flat heels and were non-skin-tight enough to accomodate big, warm socks.

And there's always fur, which, like most other warm things, can look great or terrible.
