It was actually the Odenkirk guy. Is this the show that had a skit on a quadriplegic teacher teaching quad students and they all had the same simulated computer voice so the students were pretending to be the girl student to get her in trouble? Someone was telling me about this skit on an HBO sketch comedy show recently. Apparently I have a new tivo requirement.

None, however, involve overpriced, oversized jujubes. Which, yes, is a rip. And, it's how theaters make most of their money. The margin on the tickets is very small (or so I'm told).
|
Make it ALL their money. Exhibitors' revenues from tickets (roughly speaking about half of the ticket gross - the other half goes to the studio) covers their costs of being in business. All profits are from concessions.

Thoughts on Fatties
More evidence that America is getting larger - http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...126EDT0409.DTL (statistics on the truly obese). Interestingly, the public health mental midgets (psychology has more credibility than nutritionists and dieticians, at this point) now posit that the obese are that way because their bodies are hyperefficient at storing calories as a result of evolution. God forbid, responsibility for one's actions should be at work.
This news that America has four times as many obese people as just fourteen years ago was followed by this -- http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...345EDT0622.DTL - study showing that chicks won't dig you as much if you have fat friends.

Screw it, honey. It's just not working. I'll have to think up something more inflammatory.
I'd make fun of the gays, but I like all the gay people I know. And it's no fun making fun of Blacks, because Thurgreed has his attack too finely honed.

On the plus side, it could be worse, you could be in a theatre in Jamaica.

Speaking of which, Season 2, Episode 1 of "The Office" was somehow even more painful than anything in Season 1. The introduction of characters who don't silently put up with David's shit creates agonizing conflicts so that every moment is like the times when Jennifer called David on the carpet in Season 1. I wanted to melt into the carpet when David was doing his standup routine for the Swindon crew. I had to pause it and come back to it later b/c I can only take so much human degradation at a time.
There is no fucking way they can remake this in the U.S. How the hell do you rewrite a running gag about telling a racist joke involving the queen of England playing 20 Questions about a black man's cock? How can you translate the little jerk-off movement when David denies ever "coming over a little queer"? It just can't be done. I implore you, NBC --- it shouldn't be done. Maybe they'll give up on this ill-starred enterprise when Coupling USA tanks.

Yeah. We tried, though.

More on "girls cause divorce"

What I found interesting was the theory that divorced mothers of daughters are less likely to remarry than divorced mothers of sons because mothers don't want to expose their daughters to a potentially predatory stepfather. I wonder (1) whether this can be borne out in further research; and (2) what portion of this decision is actually conscious; and (3) whether the "I can't date men because he might sleep with my daughter" factor is a source of long-term resentment by Mom and destructive to the maternal relationship.

Part 1 of two part response:
I thought the adoption explanation was interesting too, as an example of completely screwed up reasoning:
Quote:
Other readers offered what they thought was counterevidence: Adoption agencies report a higher demand for girls. But this is exactly what you'd expect in a world where parents prefer boys. In such a world, boys will tend to be put up for adoption when there's something seriously wrong with them, but many girls will be put up for adoption simply for being girls. So, if I'm looking to adopt a bright healthy child, of course I'll choose a girl: I expect that among children put up for adoption, girls are on average brighter and healthier than boys. I could well make this choice even if I prefer boys to girls, as long as my preference for bright and healthy is stronger.
|
This ONLY applies if the person choosing to adopt knows of the preference for girls. It only works if someone games the system, and gaming the system requires knowledge thereof. Without knowledge, the presumption would be that whatever forces are in place to give preference to boys exists, exist equally for adopted children.
An equally valid explanation for why parents of girls try to have children again is that the first experience was a pleasant one worth repeating, while on average parents of boys say to themselves: "another kid? no way in hell."
An equally valid explanation for the divorce rate is that mothers (who are still the primary caregivers post-divorce in this country) are more likely to be scared of having to raise a hellion/boy alone. This also serves as an explanation for remarriage rates.
