I decline to answer as this question strikes me as ironic. NTTAWWT.

But to get to the point, I was laboring under the delusion that I was the first to point out the ridiculosity of SD's "argument", but I was wro-hong (sung in Patsy Cline voice). Several people beat me to the punch (although, I think while I was busy posting a long-winded answer, these other pretenders stole my thunder.
The following are ripostes (in chronological order) to SD's effort at persuasive reasoning:

When I was first approached about appearing in this venue, I thought, my, what would hip young well-healed fashionistas want with a washed up 1960s and 70s game show host? Have I become "retro cool"? Did they really just want Carol Merrill to come back to fuel the dying embers of their adolescent longing?
But now I understand. This is really a nostalgia site! Now I feel at home. Keep this up, and I'll be very comfortable here and stay a long, long time.
(in other words, someone post something funny soon before a display like last night happens again, turkeys!)

People do have different sets of values. They are entitled to them.
Where we run into trouble is when they try to push those values on other people. So, for example, I would never, for any amount of money, allow my breasts to be photographed. It isn't something I think is appropriate for me . And yes this has something to do with the values with which I was raised. It might have something to do with hang ups about my body, but I don't really think so.
On the other hand, I could care less if someone else has it done (for money or for free.) It simply isn't a concern of mine. I don't think a woman who allows her body to be photographed is a whore, or anything evil. I think she just has a different view on the matter than I do, and that's great.
You really are being no different from those extreme people here in the US who insist nudity is wrong or evil and no one should be in porn or no one should look at naked pictures. You are just trying to force the opposite view point on people.
There is a happy medium here. Simply respect that people have different views and leave it there.

Yes, not wearing lingerie is sexy. I heart the au natural look.
Indeed!

no one hears because there's nothing to think about.
She says yes, the story comes up in the press about the fact she showing her tits, and why. people hear the story because they're thinking about seeing her tits, and realizing they have to see this movie now, even thought John Travolta makes them sick. and she becomes this actress whose tits are worth 500 for a brief glimpse. (or maybe she already knew she was going to show Billy Bob them in a few months so she should just take the 500)

I hope you know more about Hollywood than me, because I don't think this is how it would work.
She gets the offer and sits on it for a month or so. Meanwhile, she tells her other Hollywood friends that she's been offered $500K to show her tits (or if she has a good publicist, the publicist leaks it to Letterman in advance of her next appearance), the rumor floats around Hollywood and gets confirmed because she hasn't yet decided and the producers want the buzz of the possibility of her showing her breasts, even if she never does. She gets asked about it in a number of magazines and Letterman and it's as big a news item because she turned it down, as it is that she accepted. Now, HUGE anticipation builds for when she whips them out. And she's credited with being dedicated to her craft when they pop out in Monster's Ball.
But thanks for playing.

re: costumes. I was thinking of going as the walk of shame. It's been several years since this has actually happened, but I think I can pull it off - evening dress with oversized sweatshirt on top, heels in hand, messed up hair, slightly smeared makeup, fishnets with some small rips. What do you all think?
|
Much better than going in the "one night stand who refuses to leave your bed in the morning even though you have to get up and go to work" costume.

No. I don't think you got my point. Your whole last post was, as usual, automatic pilot. (Terms like "vehement disgust and noxious self-righteous judgment" and "moral shortcomings of a pop singer seem an utterly ludicrous target for ire" or "I'm not as perfectly moral as the rest of the laudable idealists on this board", etc. all show me that you don't really listen. You look for phrases that enable you to post the same old crap under the guise of "creative writing.")
If you want to limit the argument to taking your clothes off, I would say that your misunderstanding my argument. I'm not trying to impose my subjective morals on Britney or anyone else for that matter. If she expresses regret for posing nude or almost nude, I think I can say that selling out (should it lead to more money down the road) for her wasn't worth it. She made like $30 million dollars last year. The extra 5, 10 or 20 million that the skin shots could possible get her over the course of her career (which we can all agree isn't going to implode tomorrow, with or without those shots) is really pointless when you're talking about that kind of money. I am not assigning my morals to her. I'm questioning whether the reward for posing is even significant to her (relatively speaking) considering the feelings she has or may have about herself for doing it. If she is full of shit about regretting doing it and loves every minute of it, then more power to her. Sell yourself to the highest bidder.
But my observation changes when it comes to the dad who is pimping his daughter around to the highest movie of the week bidder and making her do a bunch of interviews about something that objectively speaking couldn't have been a very fun time for their family. You seem to be all for selling out in that scenario, arguing that she seems to be okay and the money she makes during that "small window of opportunity" will make up for any pain she may experience as a result. Bullshit. Money can't help with that.
And you can have the last "creative" word on this topic.

I understand completely. Do you need me to repost what you said to convince you? My point is equally simple... she's not selling much, so she should sell it, and sell it and sell it fast while the price is good. I assume her "I feel guilty about doing nudes" shit is just crap. She's trying to keep the red state fans by still playing the good farm girl caught up in the big bad world of pop. She doesn't lament a thing. However, theoretically, if she did, yes, she'd be selling out. And even in that instance, I think the $5/10 mil is worth it based on the facts. She's a young girl and she could lose a lot of money between now and age 90. Like a polar bear who kills everything he sees because he may not see food on the tundra for several weeks, she should take every check that comes her way because she has no long term staying power. That's all I have on the topic.
The Smarts aren't the Gateses. I always say "Look on the bright side," and with that in mind, they should get all the dough they can from a bad experience. Behind every cloud is a rainbow, and the glass is always half full. You just have to look at things positively and get up every morning and think "How can I make this day better than yesterday?"

its sort of a catch-22, if everyone felt that way, they wouldn't be offering $$ to see them

That would make some hilariously ensuing Reality TV!!!

Make the planet a bunch of oblivious cheerful hippie nudists and there's no matter of principle. Live in the real world, and it's rather a problem.

I love (love!) the fact that you are so belligerent on SD's pro nudie views, but cannot understand why someone would take offense at a fur coat. You even use the tired old excuse that minks are mean animals (without examining the cause-effect reality of whether spending life isolated in a tiny cage on death row might cause this meanness). You are just as quick to jump to poorly thought out emotional conclusions that suit your own selfish interests as he. And without the humor I might add.

What exactly is a VERY common body part, as opposed to a common body part, and what IS a common body part, anyway? It seems to me that it is either a body part, or it isn't. I suppose I can think of an uncommon body part -- a third kidney or something, but I am confused by the concept of "very common body part". Please 'splain.*

Sebby, listen to yourself. You sound like Dr. Phil.
Except that you're actually talking about pimping yourself or your traumatized daughter for cash.
