				      | I finished watching three hours' worth of PBS on string theory. Let me just say this: I think they're making it up. I go on record as saying that string theory is total fucking bullshit. I think it's a bunch of Trekkies with PhDs who want to believe in wormholes and 11 dimensions and parallel universes, some of which may contain hot chicks who might sleep with them but alas cannot without causing a matter/anti-matter explosion.
My question is, if you have a goatee in this universe, does your evil doppelganger from a neighboring dimension have no goatee? Or one on top of the other? Is there a merely cranky dimension where they just have soul patches?

 | Methinks you're mad because you don't understand how various string theories work. It's so simple. In fact, I'm already into Superstring Theories, since the regular ones were so basic. See, in the Superstring Theories, there are 12 dimensions, one of which is full of nubile female monkeys with my favorite quality, low standards. Maybe someday I will take you under my wing and open a dimension to Persius Omicron V, where they really know how to party.

Later human.

And I'm dark Irish, so I got that going for me.

Point of order: the BK Chicken Sandwiches are fast food, high in salt, but relatively low in fat. It's the fries and the soda you have to be worried about.

(Feeling a lot like Cliff Clavin right now -- and bowing my head in shame.)
 | I saw this on Discovery Channel or something. People rate symmetrical faces more attractive than assymetrical ones. They worked up some coefficient of symmetry, then showed some celebs and listed their number.

No surprise, the supermodels were nearly perfectly symmetrical.

But not as close as Denzel Washington.

Apparently King Kong really ain't got nuthin' on him.

Was that lame or was it Bizarro -lame.?

And the nerds only get laid in the alternate universe if the tech bubble didn't burst there. Even with the benefit of quantum physics, geeks need a bankroll to score.

 | Now and then, I'll hear this kind of thing at smart cocktail parties, and think "Shit, you go to college where you can't study math under Atiyah, you get what you pay for."

Listen, its simple if you remember to just start with M theory. M theory is just a name for a more unified theory that has the different string theories, as we know them, as limits, and which also can reduce, under appropriate conditions, to eleven-dimensional supergravity.

There's this picture that we all have to draw where different string theories are limits of this M theory, where M stands for Magic, Mystery or Matrix, but it also sometimes is seen as standing for Murky, because the truth about M theory is Murky. (Sorry, had to throw that old chestnut in, just in case someone's hearing all this for the first time) And remember you don't have to buy into the E8XE8 heterotic string, to still believe there's a SO(32) heterotic string. (i.e. no Easter Bunny does not equal no Sanny Clause.)

So M-theory is a name for this picture, this more general picture that will generate the different limits through the different string theories. I mean, you don't call bullshit on this part, do you?

Now, if your math training isn't perfect, maybe you have some bad info on K-theory. But without K-theory you wanna explain the charges carried by the D-branes? that's The question that led to K theory. Or I might say at an even more basic level, D-branes are these strange objects whose positions are measured by matrices, and studying those matrices leads to K theory. Look outside. You wanna argue that D-branes don't exist?

Dude, its time for these rather abstract and hard to use noncommutative geometrical concepts to actually come down to Earth and become useful, and your rants ain't helping.

Oh, and physics guys ain't getting any? You wanna tell that to whoever's banging Eva Silverstein?

In other news, it appears that the Yankees may have filled the black hole that has been right field. George and occasionally surly Braves free agent Gary Sheffield reportedly met recently to discuss Gary moving to The Bronx (Sheffield is his own agent). In their honor....

 | That is so hot. Not only symmetry but supersymmetry. She could unify my theories any time.

Do you think she could balance my checkbook?

On a related note, I went to see the CaliComm 2003 tour last night, which is just a bunch of underground California rappers. Down in the middle of the bill was this trio of total dorks called Ugly Duckling, who actually had some pretty kicking beats behind them. When doing a little pre-show research, I read an interview in which they stated that they met while working at a fast food restaurant called Meat Shake. The concept is that everything has meat, including the shakes (and ths cookies, and the veggie platter). I thought it was bullshit, but I go to the merchandise table toward the end of the show where the talented but ultimate nerd DJ (Young Einstein) is working, and I ask him: "Is there really a restaurant called Meat Shake?" He says: "Dude, go to www.meatshake.com - there are over a hundred locations." I do so this morning. Unbelievable. Do any of you Californians or New Yorkers know about this? Has anyone actually tried a meat shake?
