Not sure what you mean. The worst injury I ever saw on the field was a guy getting his ear ripped 1/2 way off. Fortunately for him, his side consisted mostly of doctors, so one of his team mates sewed it back on enough for him to be able to go to the ER without it hanging off.
This kind of injury can be easliy prevented by taping your ears or by wearing a scrum cap (looks like a 50's football helmet, only not leather).
Other than that, all I saw were broken noses and a few dislocations.

I think I'm agreeing, but can't remember all the old posts...
PK's are a screwed up way to decide World Cup games, but that isn't why its not popular here.
We don't get that far. To really enjoy soccer you have to enjoy the segments, beyond any chance to score. You have to enjoy a midfielder perhaps taking the ball backwards for a bit. To enjoy that you have to understand it, which takes playing or watching kids play for years.
The breaks in play would help, but hockey is no different there.
over time soccer will get more popular here because a huge % of kids are playing. It might get more popular than hockey for this reason, but in the end the ass on the couch needs the beer break. It won't be on level with the big 3.

Aussie rules, meanwhile, was on at various times including, IIRC, saturday mornings. But it didn't get bumped for sportscenter. It got bumped for real sports.

I defer to your obvious better recollection of ESPN programming. I still think there's something more, however, since it seems like the World's Strongest Man Contest from 1998 and the 2001 Men's Connecticut Billiards Invitational show up way too much.
On the plus side, I'm not going to complain about the recent increase in broadcasts of the Women's Professional Billiards Tour. Mmmmmm. Lithe young women leaning over a table dressed in tight leather pants. It's almost porn.

You're overestimating the problem. Do games go to PKs? Yes, but not always.

Understood.

Would more scoring help matters, both with decreasing ties and increasing excitement? Perhaps. But I doubt fans were glued to their sets when Mexico beat Dominca(?) 10-0 and 8-0 in qualifying play.
|
Everyone is misunderstanding my point. I'm not saying that the sole problem is penalty kicks. It's a combination of things. The fundamental problem is that the low-scoring nature of the game makes it difficult to (i) avoid ties during regulation play and (ii) resolve in overtime play.

The NFL overtime system sucks too. The first possession, at least statistically, has become increasingly important. If Viniatierri missed that field goal (or in 2002), we probably would have reform.
|
Actually, and I haven't googled this, I recall them saying over and over again that the team that wins the coin toss wins the game like 52% of the time or something.
The NFL overtime system doesn't suck. You're saying it's not fair. But it is built to be exciting and it works.

And college sucks even more, but in its own way. The 74-72 scores have to go. What happened to ties, other than in playoffs?
|
Ties suck. And if you're looking forward to a game that ends in a tie, I don't know what to tell you.

And WTF with hockey, which has a separate rule for the regular season OT games, with one less player for each team? Now that's bastardized.
|
I don't know what to tell you about hockey. Not really that interesting a sport to me either.

And aussie rules football is the balls.

When I was in Singapore, I watched this all the time. Those guys are fucking nuts. Great sport. I don't think Americans are tough enough for it. Too bad.

Are there any players in this league besides the Black Widow, Jeanette Lee?
And, TM, I'm not "looking forward to ties" I look forward to games, but I'd rather see those that are ties end in ties (except where necessary) rather than create an artificial winner through a bogus tie-resolution system. Where's the legitimacy?
(and the stats in teh NFL were fairly even until the last 3-4 years, when the coin-toss winner's OT winning pct. has increased to someting like 60% (yez, perhaps a statistical anomoly)

Yes. Of course, the score is important. But the play is importanter.

It doesn't deserve to fail. Inspired by the thought, it occurred to me that a poll might be in order: What sport has the hottest groupies?
I'm thinking basketball (NBA but not so much WNBA, NTTAWWT). Definitely not golf.
