Abba
Bryan Adams
Jeff Beck
Pat Benatar
Black Sabbath
Chicago
Dick Dale
Def Leppard
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
Iron Maiden
Joan Jett
Lynyrd Skynyrd
John Mellencamp
Steve Miller Band
the Pretenders
Simple Minds
Twisted Sister
U2
Van Halen

My guesses on who will be inducted are Black Sabbath, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Lynard Skynard (ugh), John Mellencamp, The Pretenders, U2 and Van Halen.

Anyone else have thoughts?
Are there other criteria too, like who pays for their display or something? I would guess your picks are about right. Maybe not Sabbath and more likely not Van Halen (not long enough--Sammy Hagar et al. don't count). I could see Chicago (not that I agree), and ABBA, because they have a musical, too.

Does anyone else recall that Twisted Sister was universally mocked and reviled as talentless, despite the admitted coup of getting Niedermayer to appear in their video?

Next year, let's just put up Falco, shall we?

Freebird and and plane crash. They are so in.

Jeff Beck is in tight with the RRHoF guys. He's in also. Steve Miller may get in for the same reason.

I think Chicago has a good shot, but hurt themselves with their later output. It just confirmed for many people that they were just band geeks masquerading as a rock band.

Dick Dale gets in for essentially creating surf guitar.

Yeah, I figured Jeff Beck was a lock, but maybe I've been spending too much time with guitar players lately. Is there a limitation as to how many get in per year? I'd guess Jeff Beck, U2, the Pretenders are at the top of the list.

Can somebody please tell me why?

Are you wondering if I'd even bother registering shock if minority commuters were seen doing the same thing? Speaking as a minority commuter myself, perhaps it was misleading or wrong to even speak of race. It really is more of a "class" issue. What would make middle class to upper middle class commuters who obviously can cough up the quarter spend an inordinate amount of effort scrounging for papers risking bodily harm doing so.

But aren't Chicago and Steve Miller, at the least, examples of folks who have been eligible for time immemorial without getting in? I mean, their first albums were probably before Bilmore was born.

I agree, but I don't think they did anything that the Allmans didn't do 1000 times better.

Agreed. I'm surprised he wasn't inducted earlier. I mean the guy created a whole genre, for chrissakes.

Same with most of the others, actually.

Sabbath, Dick Dale, and Grandmaster Flash should be locks in a just world. Maybe U2 and VH too (at least VH would mean induction-night fireworks between Eddie/Alex, Sammy, and Dave).

Skynyrd should only be allowed in if the Driveby Truckers are allowed to introduce them.

I'd vote for the Pretenders. I thought Chrissy was hot when I was about 16.

The candidate on that list that stands out is Grandmaster Flash. Everyone else is debateable in some way. God save us from Steve Miller and Abba.
Sabbath is a standout as well, especially for the influence their music has had on just about all rock since.

Payout

So the lottery in Texas is up to $145 million, and of course, I'm going to win it all. I'll bankroll Thurgreed's (and anyone else who signed up for that) move to Maui if it happens, so you all should root for me. Plus, I won't hound you for donations if it happens. And as everytime there's a massive lottery payout, I've already spent a lot of the money before they've picked my numbers.

This time around, it looks like I'm going to be a real estate mogul, though I'll probably be starting up film studio too. Assuming that paying off every one in the family's (there will be DNA testing, btw) debt and the party where I try to recreate the Tyco event in the Mediterranean (complete with pissing ice sculptures) with everyone I know shouldn't dent too much in the estimated $75 M cash payout, I'll be buying/building homes/property in Tuscany or Spain, Mexico, the Bay Area, central Texas, and New Mexico. I also have my eye on a few old buildings here in Houston that would be expensive to renovate, but very cool when done.

I'll then retire to do charity work, write a bit, and move my household every few months to another of my homes.

Your plans with $75M cash?

Is this the official nominees list? I thought that comes out in Sept. If so, there are a number of other artists that deserve consideration besides these...

Black Sabbath is a no brainer and should have been in years ago. Grandmaster Flash will get there as will Skynyrd at some point. U2 is an absolute lock. Van Halen, probably but not totally sure. Dick Dale will make it as well. Mellencamp? Maybe but debatable whether he should.

Pretenders are critically loved and will make it, based on recent inductions of Steely Dan, Jackson Browne, Tom Petty etc.

No Rush? Sebby will be distraught...

I do think some of the 70's prog rock and metal gets short shrift, though as it is not in vogue critically and never really was. Is Pink Floyd in? I don't think so. Also pre-Peter Gabriel leaving Genesis deserves consideration. Once Sabbath gets in, Metallica should be an absolute lock as well.

No, not an official nominees list. It was lifted from a convo in another forum where we were talknig about who might be eligible this year and who might have been passed over in previous years but are looking like stronger candidates now (e.g. Sabbath).

I think we were all Rush haters and it didn't occur to us that they should be on the list. Please add to it if you think someone should be on it.

http://www.rockhall.com/hof/allinductees.asp (list of people already in. I didn't know that there was a "sideman" category).
