Completely different situation, in my mind. A boyfriend or girlfriend (in most cases) shouldn't get the same treatment as a wife or husband.

If you can sit down and talk to someone in a reasonable manner and come to the conclusion (most likely over time), that it's in neither person's best interest to maintain the relationship, then I'm pretty sure you won't need advice on how to break things off in the first place.

If you don't want to be with the other person, but that person wants to be with you, then the above is not always possible. And you need to make it perfectly clear that you are ending it. Give the other person something to hang on to, and watch them never let go.
