However, I also strongly feel that when a person ceases to hold the office of President, we should not call him or her "President _________." Let's go back to the honorable traditions of Washington, Jefferson, and Adams --- when you're in office, you're "Mr. President"; when you reenter private life, you're a citizen like the rest of us.

For once we agree. I extend the same sentiment to senators, governors, congress persons, as well.

Free passage? I would order that the very best men and women in my Green Berets (renamed the "U.N. Auxiliary") get you drunk and frogmarch you there. By the time I'm done, the whole of Canada will look like a patriot militia.

That happens rarely, but more often than you'd expect. I just have the decency to keep my mouth shut about it, to spare us both the humiliation.

It's perfect, really. Pandering to millenialist Christians = campaigning without accountability. An unfulfilled promise, to them, is proof of Satan's hold on the world, and motivates them to turn out in even greater numbers for the next election.

Nice rant!
However, Bilmore wouldn't do that. And Club would at least have the decency to feel kinda bad about it.

Speaking of defeated Russians...
Another Jeezus in today (Sunday)'s WaPo:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2004Jun12.html
Regarding Russia, there are 173 deaths for every 100 births, and they are looking at 10% of their population being infected with AIDS in the very near future without western treatments.
I'm no AIDS activist (I'll spare you some of my darker thoughts on the subject), but I'm pretty sure even that evil preacher who thinks homosexuals "deserve" death or whatever would express sorrow at orphanages just for little kids dying of AIDS etc.
I guess this really just strikes me as a big "wow", something that is certain to have a significant impact on Russia (and thus the world) in the next few years, and something I honestly don't think I've heard before.

The Padilla Case
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2004Jun11.html
This is an opinion piece by Scott Turow which appeared in WaPo today regarding the Padilla case. (i.e. the government's position on procedures and substance, and the Comey press conference on Padilla last week, while the Supreme Courtr is still considering the appeal.).
Anyone with a good memory will know that I am deeply troubled by this case and hope that the government's position crumbles to dust. If anyone is up for a meaningful (preferably bipartisan) discussion of the issues raised, that would be great.

One would think that if anyone qualifies as "enemy combatant," with the nebulous rights therein, he does.

The "combatant" part seems like something of a stretch.
