We put a cement block on top. We've eaten turkey every year. They may get the carcass, though.

I've had that happen before, too. The real problem is that the racoons and such are messy eaters. The bones get left around, and the grease stains get all over the place--stone work, deck, etc.

Upon re-reading, this sounds like I live in some back-woods trailer park. I assure you this is not the case.
My father was a big user of the outdoor refrigerator, particularly around Thanksgiving, although it's good for a big pot of soup too. The house I grew up in had a huge screened-in porch though.

Where I live now has an unscreened porch. Last year I did a lot of Christmas baking and I stored the cookies out on my porch in tins. I ran out of tins and couldn't find more to buy, despite checking in at least a half dozen stores. So I used a tin with a loose lid to store some maple walnut shortbreads. Big mistake for me but a happy Christmas indeed for the squirrel(s)!

We're still trying to decide whether or not to go with turkey, since there won't be that many of us.

Definitely the somewhat disturbing looking canned cranberry sauce.

It may be a case of just going to the grocery store and deciding which vegetables look good at the last minute. I know that one member of our party has a thing for brussels sprouts (I'm on record as not being a fan), so I might haul out my mother's pancetta and brussels sprout recipe. I'm also thinking of maybe green beans and cherry tomatoes tossed with toasted almonds (and maybe sesame oil). Or a squash tomato onion concoction.

Oh, and macaroni and cheese, because I know that there are members of our party that are HUGE fans of macaroni and cheese. (My fondue suggestion was shot down by higher powers, though I still think they would LOVE fondue.)

I am required, by law and tradition, to make creamed corn (which I find loathesome), smashed potatoes, brandy alexander cheesecake, and two kinds of ice cream (usually coffee and cinnamon, although I am thinking of trying pumpkin pie flavored ice cream in addition this year). I have this crazy idea that I want to make a savory jello mold this year, and there is this onion tart I make which also sounds really good right about now.

The potential fondue lovers would probably either set the house on fire or end up getting cheese all over the place and/or each other. I don't think the objection is to fondue itself, just to what might happen if it was put into the wrong (rather small) hands.

Bet you would love a little girl I know who, a few years ago at either Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve, ate all the capers served with some smoked salmon. She even used the pretty little serving fork!

I became a brussel sprout convert last year (thanks, in part, to discussion here). As for grean beans, I like fresh ones with bacon, gorganzola, and walnuts. And it is way to long until lunch right now.

My mother is a pressure cooking goddess. Anything she puts in there comes out perfectly - including the brussels sprouts, which, if not cooked exactly right, are foul. I am personally afraid of pressure cookers, having seen what happens if they oversteam, but it might be worth it to learn to make perfect sprouts.

RT, don't hate on the gelatinous can-shaped cranberry sauce! I guarantee if you put out homemade and the canned stuff, the canned stuff will go first.

Burger, our coons are hungier, the bones go too.

What do you do to your brussels sprouts?

Made macaroni (well, pasta -- orichette(sp?)) and cheese last night -- cooked a couple handfuls of the pasta, grated a couple (or possibly 3, I did not weigh) ounces of cheddar, did a quick bechamel, half the pasta in a (biggish) cereal bowl, then half the bechamel, then half the cheese, then the rest of the pasta, the rest of the bechamel, the rest of the cheese and popped in the oven for about 10 min (the bechamel had gotten a little cold). Stirred it when it came out to mix the stuff around. God that was good.

i'm off the carbs, but last night at McCormick & Schmick's had the oyster stew. It's a broth of cream and melting butter. Normally it's a great bread dip, but no bread for me. So I ate it like soup- not all of it but lots. The reason Atkin's is popular is it let's one justify that behavior. anyway it seems like a simple and very good souop course.
