Potato pancakes or latkes

Good thing I checked in here tonight, or I would have missed this discussion altogether.

I usually make latkes for Hanukkah, in spite of my certified goyishkeit. Like bnb, I use an electric skillet (that I also use for making spudnuts--a family tradition--for Halloween) and fry in canola oil. With a new baby and general busyness, I haven't been planning on making latkes this year, but I was thinking that if I did, I would add a grated garnet yam to this recipe, which is fabulous. The green onions add color and a little freshness, and the potato starch makes them extra crispy. Also like bnb, I serve them with both applesauce and sour cream.

Game birds

I'd like to order a pheasant from these guys and make it as a special treat later this month.

But I am scared shitless.

I don't know the first thing about pheasant (except that it is yummy).

Help.

Oakwood Game Farm is outside my home town. They sell fresh and smoked pheasant and appear to be cheaper than your site.

More importantly, they have some recipes on the site.

ETA: This place has even more recipes.

My dad used to hunt pheasant around the farm. Mom always made it just like chicken so I've never had it fixed gourmet.

Another mail order question

Can't help on the fowl but will be interested to hear any reports.

Along similar lines, does anyone have any particular recommendations for fruit-of-the-month type things? I'm looking to buy it for a family with small kids and wonder if there are any particularly good or not-so-good companies. The only one I really know is Harry & David and they tilt more heavily to the gift basket with crap and some wax fruit than I'd like. TIA.

Actually, my experience with Harry & David's fruit has been really great.

I also love Blood's Grove and send citrus to a lot of people at holiday time.

We received a Harry & David gift basket today. It's got ten pears, one (foul) red delicious apple, a small block of cheese, a jar of peach preserves, and small bags of mixed nuts and chocolate mints. Definitely more heavy on the fruit.

The thing is, I can get better versions of everything in the basket, and pretty easily. I would much rather have gotten something else, but a) it's not for just me, but for the whole family, and I'm sure the kids will like the fruit (Thor also really liked the nuts and the chocolates, which his older brother turned up his nose at); and b) it's from my fil's partner, who has had apparent difficulty in shopping for us in the past. Unfortunately it's somewhat reciprocal, and I'm pretty sure I've given him some real clunkers. Sigh.

Another family member already bought everyone citruses so that's out, unfortunately.

Thanks. I also found this site but wondered if it wasn't pure marketing under the guise of reviews. The one they recommend looked good but it was a pear farmer's company and the packages I saw didn't have pears. It got me started wondering where the fruit comes from and whether there are other choices that y'all might have some first-hand knowledge of.

Yeah, this is exactly what I am hoping to avoid. My brother is impossible to buy gifts for and unfortunately, his birthday is also next week. I end up returning every gift I buy for him.

Since you are also the parent of young kids, would it appeal to you to get some fruit in Jan-Feb-Mar when it's hard to get decent stuff in the supermarkets? I also thought there might some benefit of having it turn up at the house.

It wouldn't be unwelcome. It's not really unwelcome now, except that the pears are a different kind than I'm used to so I'll have to pay more attention to catch them at their prime. We can usually get decent apples here through those months, but I recognize that our situation is atypical.

Miles of Chocolate

I remember the Texans here talking about Miles of Chocolate some time ago and decided to Google to see if there were any recipes online.

The Cookie Madness site has what the blogger thinks is close. Any of you who have had the real thing want to try the clone recipe and report back?
