Ah. OK, then perhaps Ironweed can tell us about divorce laws there? Per some article on Yahoo, he didn't know what her birthday or her anniversary were, and the judge didn't like that. 2/3 of net worth seems insane, but what the fuck do I know from (a) divorce and (b) football* crap?
*I would not have known what sport he played but there were pictures with the article.

You are correct, fringey, no no-fault divorce here. My ex and I got a Dominican divorce (recognized by NY jurisdiction, in case anyone here is a NY resident and needs to get a quickie divorce).
Edited to note that I learned about Dominican divorces from watching soap operas as a kid. Which is further evidence that there are important things to be learned from TV.

It is ridiculous, but Strahan was obviously being stupid--he had enough money that he should have been more careful, but not enough that it wouldn't matter.

Does she have an obligation to use $214k per year of that $15.6m to support the kids as well?
How bad can the facts be? Strikes me as either bad lawyering or oddball law.
ETA: Bad lawyering, indeed. Strahan's lawyers put together the prenup that spelled out the obligations: 50% of marital assets plus 20% of income earned during marriage.
What kind of idiot lawyer would create a prenup that gives 20% of income earned during a marriage when most of that earning is going to come during the first few years of marriage?

I'm okay -- everyone I know is too, with the exception of one acquaintance who is unaccounted for.
But yeah, this is pretty yucky.

My point is that he shouldn't have to be careful. The law shouldn't take into account why they are divorcing when dividing the marital estate. And she should only get half of what was compiled while they were married,* which, quite obviously, is more than enough to provide for her and their kids.

*And she shouldn't even get that.

I agree, but, as noted in the story, there was a pre-nup that he wanted disregarded. That's a major cock-up by M. Strahan and his advisors.
The child support determination is inexplicable in these sorts of cases--he's to pay 90% of tuition AND $18000 a month? How does any child need $9000 a month above any school tuition? If it's for the kids, it's for the kids, not a salary for the parent, or rent (she got the house) or whatever.

Isn't child support usually a % of income? Not sure if there is a cap.
Perhaps his dumbass pre-nup advisors should have taken the possibility of child support into account when determining the split of assets. You'd think with that kind of prenup in place, he'd have had sufficient incentive to keep it in his pants.

NJ has %ages for child support for combined parental income up to something less than $250,000/year; for income in excess of that, the judge has discretion in dividing it up.

- There were allegations that Strahan:
- Ditched his wife and twin 2-year-old daughters, Isabella and Sophia, to hang out with alleged mistress Nicole "Cupcake" D'Oliveira on a trip to Phoenix.
- Jetted off to Caribbean islands with various other women, including the woman who sold the family their antique chairs.
- Secretly videotaped Jean's sister, Denise, while she undressed in a guest bedroom. Cops were called, and Jean left him for a while, but he then allegedly came back after he deposited $30,000 in her bank account.
- Failed to remember his wedding anniversary or wife's birthday.

He was trying to overturn the pre-nup he signed, so it may be that the Judge held him to his own commitments. I'd like to see that pre-nup! He must have loved her.
The only other explanations for this kind of ruling are that the judge thought he was either stashing or wasting assets - and he may well have decided both were issues.
