Reagan: Found out at Acrobatics. Didn't care.
Challenger: Half day of junior high school. Saw it explode at my house with a friend. Was sad until I heard the "Where did Christy McAuliffe go for vacation?" joke.
Berlin Wall: Freshman year, in the dorms. My RA was floored over the news. I went to play basketball.
Princess Di: At a girl's house after cheating on my girlfriend with her. Was in a good mood.
OJ Arrest: At home with my roomie, trying to watch the fucking Knicks get beat in the finals. Was glued to the tv for the first 20 minutes of that stupid chase and then was just pissed I was missing the damn game.
OJ Decision: At a law firm, when I was a paralegal, watching in a partner's office with others. Amazed at how hard all the white people took it. Couldn't believe some of them were crying.
9/11: Saw the first plane hit on the way out of the house on my way to work. Thought it was some little plane that screwed up. But I lived in Brooklyn at that point and was taking the train in and saw the tail-end of the second explosion from the train. I said to everyone in the car, "Another plane just hit the Twin Towers," and everyone got up to look. It was very quiet. I wanted to get in because my office was on 41 and I had a clear view of the Towers. They wouldn't let anyone go up, though. Walked to a friend's house since no trains were running. Watched thefirst building fall at a Radio Shack. Was looking at the second building smoking one minute, was talking to someone and then the next minute I looked up and it was completely gone. When I got closer to downtown, saw people who were near the building walking home covered in dust. The person's house I went to, his girlfriend worked in the Towers. Thank God she was a lawyer and didn't go into work until 10:00.
Cancelled Arrested Development: At work. <sniff.> Hit me like a ton of bricks, even though I knew it was coming.

Lennon: I think my mom told me after school one day. It wasn't a big impact. Ditto for Elvis.
Reagan: I don't remember it having any impact whatsoever in my life.
Challenger: Seventh grade science class. We'd tuned in to watch
the launch. Several people in my class had parents who worked for NASA and there were a couple who were astronauts. Fortunately, none of them were on
the Challenger when it blew. But it was quiet for a lot of days at school after that.
Berlin wall: I remember
the images, but I don't remember where I was. I went to Berlin in 1991, though, and parts of
the wall were still standing, and most of
the Germans had no idea where things were on
the other side of
the wall.
OJ Chase: At
the now defunct Houston Brewery watching Game 5 of
the Rockets-Knicks finals with a hundred and fifty other really pissed off people. I think I was sitting on a pool table. Someone at
the sports bar was able to find
the game on
the radio and we all listened to
the Rockets losing their considerable lead on
the radio until
the game was restored on a split screen.
The Rockets lost that game. I blame OJ Simpson. Fortunately, they won
the series in one of
the best NBA Finals series I've ever seen.
OJ verdict: I was in law school, and I think it was right after a crim law class. There was a TV down in
the lounge and everyone stood around sounding disgusted.
Diana crash: August 31, 1997. Only remembered for
the walk that we took later on that day at
the ranch. It was so hot that one of
the dogs voluntarily went into
the lake. I fear that she (
the dog, not Diana) will one day reincarnate solely to have revenge on me, my sister and my parents for making her go on that walk.
9/11: Fast asleep in Berkeley, California.
The phone rang at 6:50 in
the morning, but I couldn't answer it because I'd spilt Bailey's Irish Cream on it
the night before and
the receiver stuck to
the phone. My mom left a message telling me to turn on
the television. I got
the message at 6:53, turned on
the TV and started making calls to my sister's various boyfriends to tell her to come home. She got there around nine. I went to work around ten and started posting at Infirm and obsessively looking for information on
the internet. I came home around two. We watched TV for
the next few days.
