I liked both Liquor: A Novel and Prime: A Novel both by Poppy Z. Brite about two guys who set up a restaurant in New Orleans (PreKatrina). It's about the difficulties they go through with the mob and various other shady characters. Not exactly a mystery or detective series but the books have elements of it. Very entertaining and a fun read.

I can't remember if I read about them here or not.

Great book. Made Executioner's Song, which I read first, look like a cheap knock off.

I prefer fiction mysteries and thrillers
Try "Monkeewrench" by PJ Tracy. Set in Minneapolis & rural Wisconsin. Fun set of characters. If you like it, there are 3 more so far in the series. Definitely start with Monkeewrench because the author doesn't do a lot of re-treading in the subsequent books to explain why the characters act the way they do.

They're kind of gimicky but I really like Diane Mott Davidson's books. They have recipes in them (the main character is a caterer) so that explains my fondness.

I enjoy legal thrillers (have to pretend at least someone has thrills in their work): the Butch Karp series by Robert Tanenbaum, Nina Reilly series by Perri O'Shaunessey, Ben Kincaid & Christina McCall series by William Bernhardt, Paul Madriani series by Steve Martini, Jake Lassiter series and Solomon v. Lord series by Paul Levine.

And in a genre more like Kathy Reich's books, the Kay Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell.

I read so much frivolous fluff it's scary.

Video I-Pod

I downloaded the whole season 7 of Law and Order SVU. 22 episodes and it took what seemed to be overnight. Although I was warned, this caught me off guard.

Since it took so long, I didn't upload it to my video Ipod. Will this take a super long time as well? Is there a way to expedite this process?

I also want to know is it more cost efficient to buy a previous season or a current season pass? I mean, I downloaded 22 episodes most of which I have not watched and the current pass had 8 and a promise of more to come.

Dream Job

It's unpaid, but it certainly would be fun.

Sheraton Four Points is looking for a Chief Beer Officer. Yum.

Oh, and for light mystery reading, I recommend Monkeewrench by PJ Lambrecht and Traci Lambrecht (mother-daughter writing team). Here's an article on a later book of theirs:

"Dead Run" is my favorite of their 4 books. But definitely start with "Monkeewrench" because they don't do a lot of filling in the background on the characters. And for looking the books up at the library, their writing name is PJ Tracy.

We talked about this some time ago. I have a snobby bias against books formatted into those small, thick books like all the Danielle Steel books, but I picked up Monkeewrench in the lounge at my salon and ended up paying them for it and taking it home. I haven't read any of the others yet, though. Maybe they will displace The Corrections. Hmpf.

yeah, I picked the one with the earliest publication date. Sometimes that gets confusing with multiple editions and paperback editions, but I got the right one this time. I will let you know what I think after I read the first one. The good thing about reserving books this old is that I should get them from the library very quickly.

and fyi, I hate books about war and the mafia. I don't know why, I just do. The only partial exception I make is the for the Maisie Dobbs mysteries, which take place after WW1 but deal very heavily with WW1 issues and events.
I read a Maisie Dobbs mystery over break and was going to recommend, except I couldn't remember the title, the protagonist's name, or the author's name, so I was useless.

On romance-y stuff, do you like chick lit (Jane Green etc.), contemporary romance or historical (Mary Jo Putney, Mary Balogh, Jo Beverly, etc.)?

I don't want money, I just want them to go to a good home.

But it is the new year. Is the slate not wiped clean for a whole new onslaught of boxed wine guffaws?

The connection between your ipod and your computer will transfer data faster than you could download it, but it will still take awhile.
