Okay. I have posted extensively (about everything really) about Pandora. By "work" I presume you mean show you music you will like but hadn't heard about.
I have set up 3 that played out for awhile. I have only done bands- not songs*
Alkaline Trio, The Jam and Gang of Four.
GofF has such an unusual sound that the "station" really didn't give me anything close. it was more things that you might call "noisy" but not in the same way. they remain too unique for the Pandora thing to work.
The A3 station actually was good. They have their own sound but its not as out there as Go4. It showed me a few bands i liked, and that I had never even heard of. Eventually it did get repetitive. It seems like it is always trying to stretch the envelope and offer new stuff. Eventually the "new stuff" seems like it is just wild guesses- that is it has a shelf life.
The Jam worked best. tehy are old enough to have influenced other bands, i suppose. i believe the Jam radio is the one that picked a "new song" that included the lyrics "I like butt fucking guys how about you?" that came on loud in my office while I was away from the computer- but that is now just a humorous memory so it is cool.
In sum, it works best with older stuff to see newer things that grew from the old stuff. It works better for things that are closer to mainstream .That is, Melt Banana radio probably won't get you far.
*My son did some stations based upon hip hop SONGS he likes. I know he found some guys he really likes that he hadn't heard of before. in fact he was probably listening to them at ref school Saturday.

Rob and Ambah: it is the genre of show that I typically can't get into - let's follow some "celebrities" around and see what their life is like - but with a twist that makes it slightly more palateable for me, which is that Daniel Negraneu is on it and he's trying to teach Rob to be a professional poker player. unfortunately, they seem to want to dumb the poker stuff down for the masses. they did show idiot Rob go all in on a flush draw last night. that was kind of funny. the guy who beat him with 2 pair said something like "typical rookie mistake, overplaying a draw".
|
I think Rob's a dick. I met him once and at 10:00 in the morning, he was wasted and a complete fucking asshole who said some fairly racist shit to an asian person. So, I'll never support anything he's a part of.
And it's too bad because I think Negraneu is cool as hell.

I finally finished it. I didn't care that they kicked Das It off because he was an Eminem wannabe anyway. Thanks, but we already have an Eminem. Keep it movin'.
The fat chick or the dude with the deformed nose is going to win.
MC Serch is the co-founder of 3rd Bass (along with Pete Nice), a highly popular white group in the early to mid-90s. They had a number of good songs and Serch is accepted in the hip hop community. He actually gave Nas (widely thought of as one of the best lyricists in the history of hip hop) some early light on his "Halftime" and "Back to the Grill Again" songs. Serch was down with everyone and he and Pete Nice attacked phony rappers like Vanilla Ice. He was produced by Prince Paul* who also produced some of De La Soul's early stuff and worked with many, many other artists as well.
In the evolution of white rappers, there was The Beastie Boys, 3rd Bass, House of Pain and then Eminem. So, he's probably one of the only ones qualified to run the show.
TM
*Who is also Serch's good friend, a producer of White Rappers and the black guy you'll probably see regularly on the show.
eta: His seminal moment came when he took the stage at The Apollo with his corny glasses and a white-boy-high-top afro with "3rd Bass" carved in the back and blew everyone away with the first verse of Steppin' to the A.M. (still a great song). I think he's from Far Rockaway (not the best of neighborhoods) and married a black woman and has been in hip hop since close to the beginning.

This is great info/context. Thank you!
Can I get a perspective here on a different topic? I've given notice at my firm (YAY!!!!!!!!!) and will become a client in a few short weeks. I got a dog of a project dumped on me right before Christmas that is more appropriate for someone with, oh, many years' fewer experience than I have (involves legal research and is for a senior lawyer who won't let anyone talk to clients but himself), and it is still not done. Can I, during or after I officially tell him I am leaving (which he already knows), hand him back an organized folder with the research and semi-decent work-product included, with a suggestion to give it to some associate to finish? Or must I actually finish this thing?

2. I'm sure there are other things you need to take care of. And they kind of have to be nice to you if you are going to a client. And you never should have had it in the first place.

You can tell him that he should probably get to work on this personally, as soon as possible and finish it up because you may or may not have some projects for him soon.

project for your future employer, or another company?
if for another company- take it in the bathroom. split the file in half. shit on that half, cover it with the other half.
if for your future company you hand it off now to a younger lawyer. tell the senior guy you did so as you will be occupied tying things up AND "we all want to make sure it is done right." Why risk having your name tied to the work. It can only hurt you.

wow
Typically I don't give a shit about Paula Abdul and the train wreck that is her life. But this clip of her trying to get through an interview completely wasted is highly amusing:

I'd tell the guy that your plan is to wrap it up, but you're not sure if you'll be able to complete the project before you leave. Then ask him how he wants to deal with it. Since you will be the client in the future, I suspect that he will smile, wish you well while cursing under his breath, and pass it on to another cog in the machine.

We all agree then. Should have asked you people first; a friend of mine suggested the other route.
And to answer a question somewhere up there, no, not a project for my new employer. And senior lawyer has a none-to-none possibility of getting work from me, of which there will be a lot.

This is too nicey-nice, even for you. Why even give him the opportunity to ask her to finish it?
Finishing projects is hard enough even when I'm pretending to give a damn.

Of course he doesn't. But you can still shit all over him while he thinks he's on the inside track to building up his book.

Maybe I'm missing something, but why can't you just delegate to a junior person, and then just tell the senior person that you have done so?

The other good news for you is that the Wolves are apparently also interested in Webber (according to Sid Hartman, anyway). You can always count on Kevin McHale to make the stupidest possible decision. He will probaby throw a yatch into the deal or something.
