I love it. I couldn't get enough of that shit back in the day. There was actually a time when I bought every new hip hop album that came out. There were that few. And they were only available (in Manhattan) at Tower Records in the Village on a maybe five foot long display case on the second floor, all the way in the back. I could go up there and take a look without moving anything and know there was nothing new out. Shit, half the time I'd get any new music from the Friday night mixes on 98.7 (Red Alert) or 107.5 (Marley Marl). We wanted respect and exposure back then and look what that shit got us. Damn.

I have a video tape of a bunch of old videos (like 6 hours worth), going way back to shit like Big Daddy Kane's Ain't No Half Steppin' and De La's Potholes. Too bad I no longer have a vcr.

It's both depressing and it isn't. I mean, it is depressing for all the reasons you mention. But there is also the fact that intelligent, conscious hip hop (both black and white) can come to places like Minneapolis and finding a strong and avid fan base and hip hop community. It is a white audience, but at least it pays the bills and allows these rappers to travel and be heard in the Midwest. And if it were not for local rappers like Atmosphere and Brother Ali (mentioned in the article), I probably would not know about Mr. Lif and the Perceptionists and lots of other underground hip hop. But it is definitely weird to go to a Coup or Dead Prez show and have the audience be overwhelmingly white.
Honestly, that sounds so strange that I would like to experience it. It is good and bad. It's good that these guys have an outlet and an audience and market (aside from bootlegs). And it's good that it seems pockets of a generation of kids are open to some pretty heavy, political, inner-city stuff -- open minds and all that. At the same time, I'm not all that thrilled that white people (and fewer and fewer black people) have so much influence from top to bottom (commercial to underground, depending on which you think is the top) on the direction and content of hip hop.

Used to be hip hop, even the commercial kind, was made up of an array of styles and sounds, from the politically conscious, to black pride, to party music to a more gritty, street sound. Now it's mostly homogenous crap. Great beats used to rap about some glorified, exaggerated take on the black experience.

Yeah, I'm old, but what the fuck. Shit done changed.

Okay, I'm a dumbass but I recall back in the day there used to be an underground scene with rap...that was considered the most authentic etc. is there still a strong underground scene?

Why don't you start with reading the Village Voice article. That will answer your question, at least in part.

Perhaps if the Village Voice adopted a cnn-ian "Highlights" feature, there would be fewer dumbasses in the world. For example:

Quote:
Nipple covers, hair and other red carpet secrets
POSTED: 2:13 p.m. EST, January 12, 2007

Story Highlights• Stars -- particularly female stars -- prep greatly for red carpet
• Among tricks: nipple covers, hair extensions, botox
• Heavy-duty girdles also a must
The entire article, in all its richness and complexity, is here: http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Movi....ap/index.html

Sparklehorse, darn you! I never even noticed the bullet points before, and now I look for them and am disappointed not to find them -- and not just because my time is valuable and my mind is mushy.

I also want to note that I find the proximity of the words "nipple" and "hair" in this headline to be somewhat disturbing.

I had the same reaction. When I glanced quickly at the headline, I thought it was an article about nipple hairs. On second glance, I thought it was about celebrities with nipple hairs. I didn't click the link.

Thank you for quoting the bullet highlights. I had no idea that celebrities - especially female celebrities - spend a lot of time and effort getting ready for awards shows!!

Meow. Fringey v. BnB was just the undercard.

I think you misunderstand. I was agreeing with rp (and sparklehorse for that matter). I have no hate to spew as I get ready to head out of my office for a 3 1/2 day weekend.

Too late, I've already imagined the make-up sex.

Well, had you read the entire article you would have learned that it is also easier for men to get ready for awards shows. I think that is cnn's way of making sure that people who only read the highlights will never be among the uber-informed. (Sorry, I have no time for umlauts after having read the entire piece).

My initial reaction to the headline is "how could a nipple cover hair?"

It's hard to understand what these kids today are listening to.

But cheer up. You can hang out with NotBob and Bilmore and compare denture creams.
