My boyfriend's version of this is, "I'm not going to lie to you...." Um, okay, thanks for the reassurance this time.

I think you must be dating one of my co-workers. As far as I can tell, everything after that phrase usually is less than fully truthful.

"Brooks Brothers of women's clothing" is a pretty apt description. I might take issue with "well cut" (on the grounds that something well cut is unlikely to be dumpy), but it is pretty much the definition of classic conservative. My main interview suit from LS was a charcoal flannel from Talbots, and I still have it. That's going back to '95. It's as fashionable now (or not) as it was then. My grandmother could have worn it in the '30s or '40s, my mother in the '70s or '80s, and I'd wager my daughter will be able to wear it, too ... though hopefully she won't have to.
When shopping with my mother, I am periodically duped into buying something there. A few things work reasonably well, but at least 85% of the time I wish I had never, because they seem to be cut for squarer (figuratively, meaning litrally, speaking) people than I. Blouses button too high, have too much room in the waist, pants do that tapering thing, etc. Frumpy. The kind of stuff I would buy immediately post-pregnancy when feeling uncertain.

In any event, I have a $100 gift certificate to spend there and am thinking...I don't know what. Scarves?

Doubtful. Ironically, the statement following is generally true, and painful for him to have admitted, though not earth-shattering enough to have needed the preface.

They have excellent Italian leather shoes, good cashmere and beautiful faux [glass] pearl necklaces, and a stunning brooch. Good gloves...decent accessories and actually quite cute handbags...you don't necessarily need to go all oxford shirt....they have softer options now.....I like their stuff. certain cuts are unflattering but...their italian wool skirts are nice. I'm assuming you meant Brooks and not Talbots. I wrote that for Brooks, fyi

They also have a kids section, so maybe buy something for your children?

I do not remember a pre-Gap Banana Republic. I do remember a time when The Gap was considered cheap clothing, along the lines of Old Navy. And Banana Republic was a price-step above (along the lines of The Gap now). I figured that if they were going to fuck with this formula, they would just start overcharging for everything straight down the line of stores, so they could insert another level of cheap crap just below Old Navy.

I tried this. It didn't work. One told me about how twins and triplets are made, another told me about the Iroquois, and the last filled me in on the latest gossip about another child's family (sounds like the Dad is in the doghouse). I'm sending the last one back to school anyways.

Old Banana Republic had a goofy little magazine that told back stories about the items being sold. A lot like J. Peterman. GAp bought it in the early 80s and morphed it into a Gap-like store. I think if you go to the Wikipedia entry for Banana Republic you can see some of the covers to the old catalogs.

I think back then it was more about quantity than quality, so she wanted to make sure as many cocks would be whipped out as possible.

I swear to God it said that right next to "Boden" at the top when I clicked on it this morning. Now it's gone.
