Mother puts out the word through the newspapers that she's looking for someone to be inseminated by her dead son's sperm. She gets over 200 responses.
Parents fight in court for four years to be allowed access to the sperm. Israeli law apparently only let spouses recover the sperm of the deceased. Parents say son always wanted to be a father and this is consistant with what he would have wanted. Parents win.
Now, a 35 year old unmarried economist is getting ready to be impregnated by the sperm of a dead man she never knew.
Questions: Doesn't this sound like a recipe for disaster for the poor kid? A grandmother obessed with dead father, national media attention on the kid before even in vitro, much less in vivo, single parent household (with, of course, an inlaw from hell).
Isn't this less about honoring the dead kid's wishes than his mom's inability to let him go? He can't be a father. He's dead.
Would you even consider doing something like this? Sure, I have the "if i'm not with child by X age, I'm getting a bottle of Scotch and seducing one of my gay friends" contingency plan, but at least the putative father would be alive. Hell, even going to a sperm bank for some unknown jackass's spunk would be preferable to having my kid be the living memorial to some other woman's kid. No matter what perks and free babysitting came with the gig.
Guys: would you want your sperm to live on without you and go to some chick you've never met?

While reading Elle this weekend on the train, I ran across the first article.
Dani Shapiro is a well known author that is very into self exploration and introspection. The first article I read or book I couldn't find was about her being a kept woman/sugar baby in college by her friend's much older father.
It's all downhill from there, reverse chron by links, one article is her denying her drinking prob, one about anxiety disorder, one is her being a hypochondriac. Very well educated, from a wealthy family....mind you...but the last recent article about her trying and no holds barred about IVF and trying to [neurotically] pick a donor. The question I have is....okay she has one kid, and has infertility with second try which is very common. Should someone who is so obviously unstable in her own way be allowed to or is it ethical to pursue IVF? It's obvious she's loco in a very controlled, medicated sort of artsy-uppercrust kinda way. Personally, I kinda think she should leave it alone--all articles below.

While we're on the subject (kind of), does anybody know what the going rate is for donating sperm?

It was one of the subplots of the last season of Six Feet Under. If you watched that, maybe you've finally reached that stage of blissful ignorance where tv and real life merge.

Yours? If you can fill a test tube on your own, I imagine it would bring a pretty penny.

God Speed B!
Oh Barbaro......I will miss you [sniff].....
God saw you getting tired
And a cure was not to be
So He put His arms around you
And whispered 'Come with Me.'
With tearful eyes
We watched you suffer
And saw you fade away
Although we loved you dearly
We could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating
Hard working hands at rest
God broke our hearts to prove
He only takes the best.
It's lonesome here without you
We miss you more each day
Life doesn't seem the same
Since you've gone away.
When days are sad and lonely
And everything goes wrong
We seem to hear you whisper
'Cheer up and carry on.'
Each time we see your picture
You seem to smile and say
'Don't cry, I'm in God's keeping
We'll meet again someday.'

let me rephrase. If a male friend of mine were to go to a sperm bank and donate sperm, how much money could he expect to make? and what are the general requirements for sperm donors?
I don't want to have to google this from work, people. Help a sistah out.

Okay, so Abba was the closest one with she researched egg donation so maybe she saw some type of compensation list while there? no one else has even really talked about this otherwise......Abba?
