Last year was mostly a bad Coach selection that seemed okay going in. given your guards, Larry wasn't going to work. That might be easier to see now. But you do have some talented players.

no. The Lions are a joke, and I only watch them to see what they'll do next. It truly is a jinxed team. they bring in coaches that have done well elsewhere, and the poor guys can't get anything done, and eventually leave in disgrace.
What you're going through is what I had with the Tigers from about 88 to 98. I was forever hopeful. Then after about 10 years the hope died. The Knicks haven't sucked long enough yet for you to quit.

the Lions are my second favourite football team....if that helps.

I don't know what any of those things have to do with him as an executive/coach. I'm not going to cut him slack for fucking up our team because he was a good player. Sure he should have been on the Dream Team. No, he wasn't on Bird and Magic's level, but he was a great, great player. But he makes moves just to make moves. He doesn't put any thought into his job. At first I thought he was doing okay because he got rid of so much dead weight and bad contracts. And then he put us in a worse position as far as contracts go. It's like he's brain dead.

It was not a bad coach selection. If you hire a coach that has a certain system, you don't undercut him and bring in players who can't be successful in that system. You also don't undermine his authority so that his players feel they can just go around him or wait him out. You don't hinder him with bloated contracts, making moves just so you have something to do during the day.
Larry Brown needed the chance to build something. He should have been consulted on player moves and he should have been left alone and given the authority to run that team. That's why you paid him all that money. If you wanted a straight Xs and Os guy, you would have brought in Jeff Van Gundy.

2. It's been quite a precipitous decline from the championship years. I blame Isiah. I had my reservations from the day he was caught making out with Magic at midcourt, nttawwt. His present performance just confirms my suspicions.

I know that. I actually was/am mainly hoping someone would argue that he said the Bird thing.
I don't know every decision he made. I know they've sucked for awhile. I also thought you had some good young players on the court the other night. Maybe things are getting better.
Dumars was always the quiet one. People assume the 1 is the more knowledgeable about the game, but maybe not.

Marbury was there before wasn't he? Larry and Chauncey barely worked. Starbury/Brown was not going to work out. I suppose you could say Isiah should have dumped him and given Larry the keys. Hell, I like Larry. I wish the Pistons would hire him today. We would have won last year if he were still with us.
I just meant that mix wasn't going to work in NY.

I wasn't there when he did or did not say it, but what was widely reported was something like this:
- "I think Larry is a very, very good basketball player. He's an exceptional talent," added Detroit's Isiah Thomas. "But I have to agree with Rodman. If he were black, he'd be just another good guy."
Did he not say those words?

New Years Resolutions
These are all very boring, but it is a boring day:
1. Be less gratuitously mean, esp. to my bf, because big cocks (hi fringey!) don't grow on trees.
2. Go boxing 4x week, 3x minimum.
3. Seven hours of sleep each night.
4. Don't get fired.
5. Save more money.

I think the "don't get fired" one only counts as a resolution if either you were fired from at least your last job or two or you've put yourself in the position of being precariously close to being fired now.
Mine are as follows -
1. take positive steps to figure out post-law career
2. stop with the road rage/driving angry
3. let people who make me happy know my feelings more often/better
4. find a good yoga studio in LA and start going regularly
5. spend less time wasting time in front of the computer and do more things
6. save bunches of money (half of salary? half of take home?)
Good luck to both of us.

1. Race a half-Ironman.
2. Remind Penske that he hasn't qualified for Boston.
3. SAVE MORE MONEY.
4. Be nicer when bitching about money to wife.
5. Take some anthropology courses (eventually maybe get a degree?)
6. Work less.
7. Find a new job where I can work less.

Is there a ritual that goes along with making resolutions? I am making some this year, though they are top secret so I cannot post them here (but think along the lines of no more UF, stop being a homewrecker, no more wanton sex with people more than a decade younger than me, no more open drug use in foreign countries, etc.), and I think I need to perform some sort of ritual to make sure they remain in the forefront of my mind. Perhaps I will tattoo them backwards on my forehead in glow in the dark ink so that I can see them when I look in a mirror in the dark? Thoughts? What is acceptable and expected?

I don't think Bird was overrated. He was over-loved, but that guy could play basketball.

I can't find the actual interview on the interwebs, but here is what I recall:
The Celtics had just won Game 7. In Game 6 Bird made the steal, and stole the game from the jaws of defeat. Dennis Rodman had been guarding Bird that series. He was asked about Bird, and Dennis made the comment. This was before everyone found out Dennis was nuts, so people took it seriously.
The reporters walk over to Isiah's locker and ask him if he agrees. He said something like:
- "Dennis is a rookie. Once he's played longer he'll realize how wrong he is. BUT there are some things that are screwed up in how black and white players are seen. Black players always make 'athletic plays' and white players always make 'intelligent plays.' That's screwed up. Did you see the play Bird made to steal the ball in game 6? that was a very athletic play, but it's not reported that way.
And it's screwed up because it sends a bad message to kids both black and white. It tells black kids they aren't as smart and it tells white kids they really can't be on the same court. The press should be more aware of this and stop."
I agree with him. I see it to this day in youth basketball.
I guess because he didn't just catagorically deny what Dennis said he was seen as seconding it. He didn't.
Of course the fucking Celtics were so untouchable that "Celtic Pride" caused the story to stick. AND I hope the Celtics continue to suck forever.
