A landlord may enter a tenant's apartment with reasonable prior notice and at a reasonable time to provide necessary and agreed-upon repairs.
Did the LL give notice?
Not a LL/T atty.

But to advocate for your friend, if there was a virtual handing over of the keys, in the sense of the landlord asking if it could go ahead and paint, and he saying "sure, I'm not going to be there anymore, do you want the keys back?" And the landlord saying "Drop them off when convenient before December 1," then he's turned over possession well enough.
If there was no such discussion, and the painters just showed up without warning, I'd start bandying about the term "constructive eviction."

Thx. He had the keys still, but the painters showed up totally unannounced. We are going to continue to yank their chain in the hopes of getting a few dollars.

How Insane Are You?
Your score is: 128
INSANITY INDEX 7.11 Thank you for taking the SaniTest(TM). Your score indicates that you are markedly unstable. You likely have difficulty concentrating, occasionally make very bad choices, and are susceptible to dramatic mood swings that can lead to social embarrassment and/or gunplay. Other notable people who scored at this level include hard-drinking author Ernest Hemingway and incredibly wealthy murderer John DuPont.

What ARE Gym Clothes, anyway
Mom's XMas gift to Dad: surprise membership to a gym (she doesn't know which yet) that won't be too fashionable a place. I have been instructed to buy Dad "workout clothes" to wear there (and for when the personal trainer comes to their house) but not sneakers. Socks -- easy -- but what else? Anything lycra or yoga pantish (NTTAWWT) is just wrong and I can't go there. Specific examples of what to get? Sweats? "Running shorts" even though he doesn't run? He'll be doing weight training and I guess Nautilus type equipment/stairmaster. Thx.

Did a favor for a friend a few weeks ago about a very similar issue. On the last day of her tenancy, floor guys showed up and started ripping up the floors, even though some of her possessions were clearly still in the apartment. Was able to get about $7500 for her aggravation but that was because the landlord had also disrupted her life substantially in other ways. This last-day entry was just icing on the cake. You might check the codes to find out whether your state punishes landlords for stuff like this. In California, we have some statutory damages for entry without permission.

I feel sorry for your Dad. Buy him some nice cigars, also.

[INANNA?]I have to assume you went ot the trouble of making a sock so as not to have your primary alter ego identifed with this little phraselet? [/INANNA]
But since I am in the spirit, might I suggest a pair of Tube socks from Caldor's and a copy of the Atkin's Revolution to read as he is strolling on the treadmill?

You can buy him short-sleeve (or long-sleeve) shirts that wick (non-cotton). As discussed on this board before, Patagonia makes a great capilene shirt. It might be the only product by Patagonia that isn't ridiculously overpriced.
$100 NFH LOVES Patagonia.
Here are some good ones from REI:

Assuming your dad is not in shape but not terribly fat, I'd go with perhaps a couple of pairs of shorts made out of sweet pants material that are fairly long and loose, and a pair of sweet pants. Something like this:
Land's End Jersey Knit Shorts
and
Land's End Jersey Knit Pants
These are comfortable to work out in, without being too revealing. The jersey knit hangs better than nylon on less-than-perfect bodies.
It's probably too late to order mail order, but you can get something similar at any sporting goods store.
As for shirts, working out in a random t-shirt seems to be de riguer for men.

Does this count as an airing of grievance or as a feat of strength?
